First Look at Transformers Chess Set

By News_Staff on Sunday, February 18, 2007

Thanks to SOTA toys who sends us an exclusive first look at the Transformers Chess set. Based on the classic 80's cartoon, the set will have the the Autobots and Decepticons facing off in a struggle for dominance. The Autobots line up includes: Optimus Prime, Rodimus Prime Grimlock, Ultra Magnus, Jazz, and Bumblebee. The Decepticons include: Megatron, Galvatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave and Kickback. See the chess set in the image gallery.

Each piece will be approximately 3.5" tall. Look for images to be released in December.

These robots will face off on a Classic Tranformers Gen1 themed chess board measuring approximately 17" X 17" X 3".

Look for the Transformers Generation 1 Chess Set in the Spring of 2007, with and SRP of $299.99.

interesting but some design flaws at this point:

1/ Figs like Grimlock take up too much negative space on the board.

2/ The board itself is too bland. Perhaps making it look like cybertron more or how about making it out of clear grape coloured grids, like energon cubes, or by making an 80's style green "polygon computer screen"?

3/ The figs look too similar to heros of cybertron pvc figs. Perhaps they ARE PVC figs and are just included here as a mock up then fine.

4/ For a more "chess friendly" view of themed chess figs, check out the Gundam PVC chess figures and, for a more amazing set of chess pieces, the "Kingdom Hearts" set is pretty great.

here they are:

If I purchase it, Sure I´ll paint the board as the typical 80´s transformers grid

Nevermind this set. Hasbro just needs to keep cranking out the titanium figures. I'll just make my own chess set this way. There are a few characters that I see that I'd like to just have, mostly Decepticons.

Meh, rather just buy a marble chess base and get the 3" Titanium figures as pieces instead. This seems uninspired to me.

Figures look good, certainly better than the lil Titaniums. The board itself, like others said, is just a bit bland

Bah. Doesn't even look like it'd be that good for play chess on.

I'll wait for a Transformers themed monoply. If it's between thirty and 50, I'll go for it.

I think I know why it's $300. Go to the SOTA site, and they actually have a Spider-Man set (which looks pretty cool). All the pieces are made of pewter, and painted...

Still a bit pricey....
