''Transformers'' Movie Japan Images, News & Review

Report / Review by Primal-Convoy

The movie opened on the 4th of August here in Japan and, although the plot was no suprise thanks to some posters at tformers and tfans, there was plenty of action to keep people happy.

There hasn't been a lot of advertising for Bay's creation over here in the land of the rising sun. with minimal TV commercials and train interior posters. There also hasn't been a lot of merchandise for sale at the cinema, compared to the huge amounts still for sale from movies such as Spiderman 3, Harry Potter and Pirates 3.

Meanwhile, in the cinema itself (Funabashi Lallaport TOHO Cinema) there was little or no cut-outs OR posters of the movie.

The merchandise that was officially on sale was:

- Official Guide Book
- "Paper protector" (No English word for this, but you put it under the page you are using in your school notebook so you wont indent the page under the one you are writing on).
- Clear plastic sleeve folders
- 2 Sticker sheets
- A keyring set featuring Autobot and Decepticon logos
- A black and white (Japanese size) "L" (Western: "tiny") black T-Shirt with Sector-7 info on the back and the Autobot insignia on the front. (not for sale at Funabashi cinema).
- A black baseball cap with Optimus Prime's outline in black and red.
- Notebooks
- a Japanese style-fan with the Decepticon logo on one side and a montage of the movie bots on the reverse side.
- Optimus Prime/Megatron pin badges.

Also for sale was the "Transformers: Ultimate Guide", which featured a large cardboard Optimus Prime model kit and a guide to many of the Transformers toys with some bonus movie toy/film design tidbits.

Also, nearby, in Toys R Us, the TF toy isle was moved to the front with some movie posters (not for sale or available to anyone except the staff probably) swinging over them.

Plus, a nearby bookshop was selling the latest "Hyper-Hobby" magazine, featuring the "Legends of Cybertron: Movie Bumblebee - Scanning Version" figure.

Not a bad movie experienece. The audience actually laughed at the jokes (especially the bits about "Japanese technology" and Japan being advanced, what with the movie taking sooo long to come out overe here!) but some people have commented that it was hard to make out what was going on.

All in all, it would seem that from the lack of merchandise, minimal advertising and the fact that Transformers are not as popular or well known as a brand in Japan, then TF: Movie 2007 will not be outselling Pirates 3, Spiderman or even Harry Potter anytime soon in Japan.

However, it's still early days yet as not even a week has gone by!

"Till all are one!"
