Welker Interview Blitz Ditches Out His Thoughts on the Transformers Franchise
johnDoe4880 - Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Frank Welker has granted two quick interviews with the UGO Movie Blog and Newsarama to celebrate yesterday's release of Shout! Factory's Generation 1 Season Two Volume One DVD box set.

Highlights below.

UGO Movie Blog Interview:
Jordan Hoffman: Of all the Transformers you've given voice to who remains the closest to your heart? Blades, Buzzsaw, Chromedome, Frenzy, Galvatron, Groove, Jazz (Commercials only), Laserbeak, Megatron, Mirage, Mixmaster, Ratbat, Ravage, Rumble, Sharkticon, Skywarp, Sludge, Soundwave, Superion, Sweep, Trailbreaker?

Frank Welker: Did I do all those? Are you just funning me???? Actually, I loved doing "Megs" he was so wonderfully evil and I was very happy with the voice. Soundwave is just plain fun to do...that voice can rattle windows in a large studio and I don't have to yell!!!! My outside fave is Sludge...dumb, slow and goofy, a little too close to my own personality though.

Jordan Hoffman: ...[B]e honest - could you follow the plot of Revenge of the Fallen?

Frank Welker: Hey, I never read the script and I actually haven't seen the feature yet. But I can tell you one thing with great certainty....Soundwave didn't have nearly enough lines!!!!
Newsarama Interview:

On Megatron:
Welker admits that of all his performances, Megatron is still a personal favorite.

"Number one, is he is different than any of the other voices I have had the privilege of providing. Also, the fact that he has remained a fan favorite and caused a bit of controversy along the way qualifies him for my personal hall of fame. I think he and Soundwave have set themselves apart from the other robots in terms of sound identification and that makes me a proud papa."

"I purposely set out to make him standout," says Welker. "I wanted him to be different than just having a big loud voice...Putting in the scratchy weird noises seemed to work and the producers never asked me to do anything different. That helped because it was a visceral reaction to what I saw and read about him and for me that tends to make for the best latitude in acting. "It was appealing because I had been doing ‘Smurfs’ and ‘Baby Muppets’ and lots of cute furry creatures. This was a big departure and as actors it is fun to stretch out and do something entirely different. I didn't realize that it was going to be as big as it was. I really thought it was just a cool job and like most shows it would go away after a season or two. It was nice to be wrong."
On working on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen:
"I was very happy that Michael felt foreign actors would have trouble with the Soundwave voice. I ended up working most of the foreign versions. That was extremely hard. It took me many hours to do the different languages. Soundwave in French is not to be believed."

Quote FTW >>> "I can tell you one thing with certainty, Soundwave didn't have enough lines!" I love Frank Welker even more now, if that at all is possible in the first place.

Once again, Twitter user @miiakira2017 has posted an image of their Transformers-related design work. Today, it's a classic car- the specific make, if any, eludes RAC - that would have turned into a laser pistol-wielding cowboy. Though there's a slight resemblance to 2010's Hunt for the Decepticons Scout-class Hubcap, the replies peg this as a Diaclone-era design, so well before that figure was designed and likely a coincidence.
