Original Transformers G1 Packaging Art Painting up for Auction

By Primus on Monday, October 26, 2009

It's kind of sad, but your childhood is up for sale. What could top Andrew Wildman selling off Marvel Transformers comic cover art? Jeffery Mangiat's actual artwork from the back of Generation 1 toy packaging, that's what.

This is no print or reproduction. It is the actual artwork created in gouache (paint) on cold press illustration board that was painted by the world renowned illustrator himself! The painting shows the truly classic Generation 1 scene with The Metroplex deploying Autobot soldiers versus Scorponok's Defense Base with eminent Deception invasion in opposition.

It's up for auction now with a starting bid of $7,500 USD. A real bargain when you think of the historical nature of the painting. Read the description form the Ebay Auction:
TRANSFORMERS ORIGINAL ART~PAINTING~1980S~HASBRO~RARE This auction is for an ORIGINAL work of art featuring THE TRANSFORMERS! This one-of-a- kind PAINTING appeared on the back of HASBRO TOY packages in 1980S. This is an ORIGINAL Gouache on cold press Illustration board artwork painted by world renowned illustrator, JEFFREY MANGIAT! Mr. Mangiat also produced many of the first generation Transformers artwork for numerous package designs. His paintings are known worldwide for their incredible use of detail and intense color palette. This fabulous painting measures 26” X 24” and is in superb condition. There is a minor crease in the lower right corner that does not affect the majesty of this rare original. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to obtain a piece of Transformers toy history directly from the artist who created this artwork! The winning bidder may choose to have the piece signed and personalized if they choose. If you are a dedicated fan or collector of THE TRANSFORMERS or high quality artwork, this rare ORIGINAL PAINTING is for you! Payment may be made by Paypal in US funds and MUST be received within 10 days from end of auction. STRICTLY ENFORCED! (FREE SHIPPING- priority mail domestic USA delivery confirmation & insured!) Intellectual and publishing rights remain property of artist and Hasbro.
Check out the auction that ends in 7 days from the date of this post at Ebay.com.

My sale price guess, $34,659..... Any ways I do like the idea of a TF art book with original art from the box's, comics, shows and fan art submissions.

Yes, the Metroplex painting was the third in the series I believe. The first was with Optimus in the foreground, then the second was the one also depicted in the pictures with the Dinobots fighting the Insecticons. Man how I LOVE the second one! I still remember seeing that painting on the ba... read more

I know this is G1, but this is the later G1 artwork. Wasn't there 2 previous ones before this? I too love this artwork because of the complexity of things going on. The detail on the things in the background always....still amazes me. Why is this for sale? Wouldn't Hasbro want to keep this t... read more

Wow.. Seeing this not only brings back memories of back in the day, it brings a tear to the eye. This is truly close to a holy grail of G1 art.. Granted, $7500 is not cheap, but how can you put a price on such a rare piece of nostalgic art. Whoever wins that auction should be proud indeed.

The back pannel pictures where one of my favorite things about Transformers. I could look at the back of a box for hours on end and just be wowed by the detail of everything going on. We'll never have anything that cool again!!! I would love to have an origional piece, but that isn... read more

I wish I could buy it. More than anything else, box art like this is something that has been lost these days. Hasbro should release an art book of all, or most of, the original artwork that was used on toy packaging in the '80s.
