Gosh, if there ever was a rumor I didn't want to be true. It is this one just in via MTV Geek that Disney and Hasbro are in talks about an acquisition. With the pocket-book open and Star Wars in the cart, it seem the Mouse is looking for more cheese in Hasbro's library of brands including Transformers, My Little Pony, GI Joe, Battleship, Nerf, Magic: The Gathering, Monopoly, and literally 100s of toys and games kids have grown up with for decades.
Obviously, the large cache of Popular Culture properties would add to Disney's library to make a true Tour De Force in the entertainment industry. Its also not hard to imagine Hasbro's is in a position to want to be acquired either. With retail sales revenues flagging and the the slow uptake for The Hub, this could save the day and keep the channel afloat, or at least one can hope. Traditionally, acquisitions get rolled up into the parent company and it may be fans will have to watch their favorite Robot's shows on the Disney Channel if this goes down.
On the toys side, it might be good for fans and collectors to have the brand under a bigger umbrella with a bigger reach. Disney has deep pockets that hopefully would allow for more stable product roll outs and hopefully more modest pricing. With Hasbro struggling to appease Wall Street, they have raised prices over 50% in the last 5 years alone. Only time will tell what's going to happen. PLEASE, Share your comments on the possible event and what it would mean to you.
