Unite Warriors Galvatronus Revealed - Sort Of! But It Only Adds More Questions

Barely 24 hours since Hisashi Yuki tweeted a slightly less obscured silhouette teaser of the presumed UW-06 combiner, and article about TakaraTomy Mall on Yahoo Japan has provided our first frustratingly tiny look at the set. Seen in a group with all the other Unite Warriors sets, we can now start piecing together what the components are - and the clues at hand point to a very odd grouping. For his part, Hisashi Yuki in a subsequent tweet seemed dismayed at the premature release of a picture of the combiner. For more details and very sadly low-res images, keep reading!

What can be seen right now is a Galvatron torso distinctly inspired by the toy, predominantly grey with red detailing. However, purple is still visible, mainly at the edges of the thighs, and it does not seem to be abberations created by the low resolution of the image. This suggests a deco oriented to "color changing" from a still purple Cyclonus to a grey Galvatron body. Compromises to both are likely in accomplishing this, but if we're interpreting it correctly, should be an impressive effect in practice.

The arms appear to be Starscream, recolored from Skydive. A seeker-style head has been thought to exist as part of the tooling for one of the Aerialbots based on the lineart appearing in Designer's Desk features. If true, that may debut on this instance of the Skydive mold. The other arm using Air Raid's tooling has coloring that strongly resembles Armada Thrust - an odd choice for sure, but stay tuned for additional speculation on that.

The combiner's right leg is Offroad in a blue that immediately calls to mind Soundwave, especially taken together with the silver grill detail visible on the truck hood kneecap. This would itself be a strange direction to go unless perhaps the First Aid head could be made available for this variation of the mold, as it's the only one currently believed to exist within the array of parts that could at all begin to pass for Soundwave. The other alternative might be Crankcase and retaining the Offroad head as "close enough" and maybe using the character's IDW appearances for justification. However, Crankcase feels like a strange choice in the same combiner with a Starscream limb, while Soundwave could fit in given a certain line of thought.

The left leg is the Rook mold, still seemingly in largely white. The area around the ankle looks like a darker grey, but it's unclear if this is shadowing or an intentional color variation. The mold also picks up orange by taking that in place of Rook's light grey parts. I can't help but think it might be an attempt at Snow Cat using some aspects of the darker Universe recolor of the Energon toy. If the dark grey is intentional, it might be the actual plastic color with the white shell being executed through paint. This would result in an approximation of Snow Cat's deco layout. But that is admittedly still a stretch. If these assumptions are incorrect though, the actual intent of that toy is indeed well hidden at this stage.

But I'm inclined a bit more to think that Snow Cat is a possibility for one particular reason: The Demolishor head on Onslaught. If this combiner is split with two G1 limbs and two Unicron Trilogy derived limb characters, it may point to a longer range plan. It may work out that a UW-08 (assuming Bruticus directly follows Galvatronus) is already being planned which might show the opposite breakdown: Demolishor as a torso with two more each classic G1 characters and Unicron Trilogy characters, permitting buyers of both sets to mix and match to get "pure" combiners and themed teams. For instance, Demolishor's set might include a Sideways recolor of the Groove mold and a Stunticon recolored as Armada Wheeljack. This is of course complete conjecture, but carries a certain sense within the currently provided context. With any luck, given this leak, TakaraTomy will authorize Yuki to begin releasing more information a bit earlier so that we might start getting concrete answers about Galvatronus soon. Stay tuned...!
