Transformers Universe: Bumblebee - Much Smaller Budget For Prequel Movie

Typically Transformers movies have had budgets around the 200 million dollar level, which includes The Last Knight with an estimated budget of $217 million - which according to Box Office Mojo, it still has not made back in its domestic ticket sales* as of July 20th. With this in mind, it's perhaps little surprise that the next movie up, the prequel focused on Bumblebee is being run much more lean. Screenrant has reported on the situation and given us a surprisingly low budget projection for the movie. Keep reading to find out what the film will be working with!

Transformers Universe: Bumblebee has already been noted as taking a smaller scope than most of the prior Transformers titles. A recent report revealed that, thanks to certain monetary incentives, it would be filmed entirely in California, for one example. But it turns out this is not going to be by choice of what's best for the story, rather it's a necessaity of the production budget. It seems that only about $70 million will be allocated for the production of Bumblebee's (mostly?) solo adventure.

A report from all the way back in early 2016 when the Writer's Room was fresh on everyone's minds was already establishing that the newly sparked concept of a 'Bee Movie would likely be run with lower costs than a typical Transformers movie, so this still seems to be moving according to form, rather than specifically being a response to The Last Knight and its largely disappointing box office numbers. We can't rule out that the budget may have narrowed more than originally planned as a result of that, but it seems like this was never being looked at as another $200m-plus epic.

This means that while director Travis Knight may have more of a challenge in producing the film, if it's successful he may stand to score a bigger victory for the accomplishment on merely a third or so the budget each previous movie had. Not to mention that even if ticket sales don't improve very significantly for this next film, the smaller investment will still make it easier to characterize as a win in the book keeping.

* The domestic box office for The Last Knight has not yet earned back its production budget. International ticket sales have more than made up for the difference, with the current worldwide estimate standing at $520 million as of the end of its first month in theatres.
