Darth Vader Death Star - TF Star Wars - Figure

“That’s no moon… that’s the frickin’ Death Star!” … Okay so Obi Wan didn’t really say that when he first set his eyes on the Death Star but I sure did when I saw the toy at Toys R’ Us.

I must first state that I have seen the other Star Wars/Transformer line but have mostly scoffed at the majority of the figures due to the strange proportions and the generally odd look most of them have in robot mode.

This new incarnation of Vader however, literally took my breath away! But I’m getting ahead of myself. On to the review!

Packaging

The Death Star comes in a huge box, with all the trappings of a typical Star Wars toy. The box itself is probably big enough to hold 4 copies of the actual toy in Death Star mode or 2 copies in its robot Vader form. The Inside of the packaging is reminiscent of the décor in an Imperial space station and could possibly double as a diorama backing for the rest of the line.

Alternate mode (Death Star Mode)

The Death Star mode is a spherical shaped space station. Unlike its actual movie counter part, this version of the Death Star is actually complete.

It’s basically a smaller version of Cybertron Primus without all the guns and cannons sticking out. The major color in this mode is grey with minor white highlights.

There’s a lot of detail on the surface of the Death Star, representing the trenches found on the actual Death Star. The towers and the turrets shown in the movies aren’t represented on the toy itself but over all it’s a relatively faithful rendition of the real thing.

The main cannon (the one that destroys planets) comes in the form of a spring loaded green missile that can be fired by opening the top of the Death Star and depressing Vader’s head. There’re 2 concealed compartments in this mode that hold the 3 Tie fighters and an additional feature that I’ll explain a little further in the robot mode.

Pushing a button at the back of the figure in this form activates the lights and sounds. The sound effects are very accurate and are sure to bring a smile to your face as you picture the planet of your choice blown to smithereens.

There’re 3 different phrases in this form. All the sounds are accompanied by great flashing green lights around the main cannon area and the patented Vader breathing sound.

Robot Mode (Lord Vader Mode)

Lord Vader stands at an imposing 11 inches (he’s a tad bit shorter than MP Convoy). If you include the height of this shoulder pads his total height is about 13 inches. Transformation from alternate to robot mode is not overly complicated and rather satisfying. Black becomes the primary color in this mode, with silver accents on the body and waist.

Upon closer inspection you’ll realize that some parts of the black on the figure actually contains some kind of faint gold glitter in it enhancing the look of the figure!

The majority of the Death Star parts can be folded and twisted away so they’re less conspicuous. The rest of the Death Star ends up on his back, in a style similar to Cybertron Primus, giving Lord Vader a very majestic feel.

Most of this bulk can be concealed with the use of cloth cloak provided, yes… you heard me right, it comes with a wicked cloth cape that can be attached to Lord Vader’s back! This can be rolled up and kept in the concealed compartment in alternate mode.

This is simply the best-looking Star Wars / Transformer figure to date!

Vader is very well proportioned in this mode. The head sculpt is probably the most accurate amongst the 2 other Vader toys in this line (other than the red eyes).

Lord Vader’s limbs are a lot blockier than his movie persona but it is very appropriate to his robot form. 2 transparent red doors can be found on his shins and on the parts of the Death Star that folds behind his shoulder. These are the holding compartments that hold the 3 mini Storm Troopers and a Mini Lord Vader.

The lights and sounds in this mode are pretty spectacular. Without the Light saber in his hand, pressing his arm button will emit the sound of his blaster. When the saber is inserted into his right hand however, the sound changes into the saber powering up and the unmistakable sound of a humming saber.

Pressing the arm button repeatedly with the saber attached gives you the sound of the saber parrying and swishing around. Pushing his chest button gives about 5 different movie phrases accompanied by lights and wheezing.

Poseability

In Death Star mode, there’s about as many poses you can get out of a soccer ball, meaning 1 single lean, mean, planet destroying, rebel smashing pose. 4 little legs can be pulled out from the bottom of the Death Star to keep your space station from rolling off the desk.

In the robot mode, Lord Vader is rather posable. He has a full range of motion in most of his joints. Even though his ankle is not jointed, his feet can rotate about 180 degrees horizontally, creating the illusion that his feet are firmly on the ground regardless of the pose.

It’s a pity they couldn’t make the fingers jointed but it’s probably due to the electronics in his right hand.

All the joins twist and turn with solid satisfying clicks, allowing all kinds of awesome poses.

I’ve never been a fan of the Star Wars / Transformer line due to their strange proportions and fragile handling and have never been bothered to buy one prior to this. The Death Star / Lord Vader is one solidly constructed toy with superb looks; the electronic sounds are spot on and adds to the desirability of the figure. My only peeve is that there is no place to store his saber in alt mode. This figure is quite simply a must have for both Star Wars and Transformer fans alike!

My Score:
I largely agree with the reviewer. This is probably the first and last WSTF I''ll bother with, thanks to not having a cruddy robot mode (and transforming into the frikkin'' Death Star!).

My only complaint is the difficulty of getting all those plates aligned right. Any idea whether the quotes are actually spoken by James Earl Jones or an impersonator (even if they aren''t, it''s still convincing enough a job).

This one looks quite alright, much better than their previous efforts.

Ahh thanks Stryker, I''ll try out the saber storing soon. I managed to stack 2 tie fighters into 1 compartment without taking them apart, I stacked them in a way where the outside of the solar panel of the first fighter is touch the inside of the solar panel of the 2nd fighter. Pretty hard to explain how I did it without picture but stuffing 2 into 1 compartment should be quite possible. The 3rd one I stored with the the cloak in the other compartment though it does fall apart sometimes if i don''t roll up the cloak nicely.

My Score:
Also, (I forgot to mention in my previous post) the TIE fighters are moulded incorrectly with hexagonal shaped pegs in the solar panel holes. You can straighten out the cockpits, but they''ll just snap into the nearest incorrect shape. I had to superglue them into the correct position.

And most of the online preview pics of Death Star mode show giant gaps at the seams. This is simply due to an incorrect transformation. Shane Kwek has his correctly transformed above, and you can see that the seams are quite tight. Good job.

Lastly, I was unable to figure out a way to fit all three TIE fighters into the storage compartment without taking them apart. Is there a way to do that? Anyone? Since mine are now superglued so that they are correct, I can''t take them apart.

I love this toy as well

HOWEVER, you CAN store the lightsaber inside the Death Star by opening up a side panel and sticking it in so that it is horizontal across his chest between his legs and his chest. The panels close completely, and the saber is completely loose and safe inside.

I had a feeling they''d do the Death Star sooner or later. If only all SWTF had good proportions as you said about this Death Star/Vader figure...

My Score:
Without a saber its just the normal laser blaster sound. With the Saber in hand, you get the saber hum, saber wooshing (not sure how to describe this) and the saber blocking sound, it sounds more like a saber blocking another saber, i can''t really tell the difference unless i watch the move again though :D

is it the sound of a blaster or the sound of him blocking a blaster ala empire strikes back?

My Score:
Hi all Tformers readers and fans alike,

I saw the Darth Vader/Death Star toy personally yesterday. I was quite impressed by the sheer weight of the Star without even seeing it go into robot mode yet. Weight and sturdiness comes hand in hand and it usually means better overall quality of the toy i.e. more resistant to breakage, manhandling etc..

It felt good in my hands and I was twirling it around looking at the details on the "surface" of the star. The grooves was nicely done and felt detailed enough for my taste.

The sounds made by the Star could have been clearer though. It sounded quite muffled when I tried going through the various phrases. The photos uploaded of the Vader mode was impressive. Even thought Vader does not really look very much like himself in the transformation, he does have his own air about him- being almost a feet tall in the mode helps too I guess :)

Overall, a great review and the many pictures posted help a lot in visualizing the toy for me.

5 Stars for the review !

4 Stars for the Death Star/ Vader toy itself !

I don''t really see the red eyes either. But like he said, maybe it''s a red tint to what generally appears black.

My main thought would be this, I think both Vader here and Primus were far better renders of the planet idea than the original Unicron toy, I wonder if they''ll ever go back and do Unicron better? I didn''t buy the first verion, vut if they did it as well as these I''d think hard about it.

My Score:
Heh, thanks for clearing up the Death Star bit JediTray, its been awhile since I last saw the movie and I think I had the death star from Return of the Jedi in mind.

Heh, yeah Lord Vader doesn''t have a blaster in the actual movie but I was more talking along the line of the toy''s blaster. Yeah, the Star Wars blaster sounds are rather unique so it was nice that they included the sound together with it.

I just did a quick check on Vader picture and most of his eyes seem rather black (in the movies and the replica helmets at least), perhaps they''re a very dark red.. :D

Sadly, the mini TIE fighter''s cockpit cannot be rotated. It was one of the first things I tried to do when I got em'' but they cannot be attached so that they stand vertical instead of horizontal.

Heh heh, I personally quite hate the line too and don''t intentionally own any of the others in the line (I now own 2 others (Mace Windu and Saesee Tiin) because they were given free with my purchase of the Death Star. I was however, more than pleasantly surprised by this toy due to its strong looks (relatively strong) and its solid construction. So surprised in fact, that it made me crawl out of my hole and give my review of this particular figure. It is seriously in a league of its own compared to the other toys in this line.

I''m glad you found the review informative though. Just wanted to bring some light to the only SWTF figure (in my opinion :D) worth mentioning.

Cheers!

Shane

My Score:
Being a Star Wars and a Transformers fan, I gotta start with saying that I HATE the SW Transformers, all of them. They are collecting dust in my local stores and I wish Hasbro would stop. Now, with that out of the way....

Some things need clearing up, just because I''m retentive that way. No harm meant, Shane. :) So, here we go:

"Unlike its actual movie counter part, this version of the Death Star is actually complete."
This toy is modeled after the first Death Star, which was indeed completed.

That pic of the TIE Fighter is incorrect. I sure hope that the cockpit can be rotated to the proper position!

"The head sculpt is probably the most accurate amongst the 2 other Vader toys in this line (other than the red eyes)."
Vader''s helmet does indeed have red lenses. Although, they are a bit bright on this toy.

"Without the lightsaber in his hand, pressing his arm button will emit the sound of his blaster."
Vader never had a blaster. But, they sound cool and I can see why Hasbro threw that sound in. :)

"I must first state that I have seen the other Star Wars/Transformers line but have mostly scoffed at the majority of the figures due to the strange proportions and the generally odd look most of them have in robot mode."
Couldn''t agree more. Don''t own any, never will.

Anyway, thanks for the thorough review, Shane! Although I hate them, I am curious at times. :)
