Sideways Vs. Axer - RiD - Figures

A number of store exclusive toys came out during the tail end of the Robots in Disguise line. Wal*Mart offered the Sideways Vs. Axer two-pack. Repaints of the Generation 2 Laser Cycles, these were packaged together as Megas and shipped six to a case.

Axer
Decepticon Interceptor
Strength - 6
Intelligence - 8
Speed - 3
Endurance - 9
Rank - 7
Courage - 8
Fireblast - 8
Skill - 10

Tech Specs
“AXER learned his craft hunting down microchip smugglers in the slag swamps of Cybertron. Following a rescue mission into a black hole, AXER joined GALVATRON on Earth to keep tabs on his “operation.” This custom-designed, all-terrain turbo cycle is equipped with heat-seeking proton missiles and quadraphonic sonic blasters. He brandished an arm-mounted magnetic-lock destabilizer cannon in robot mode. Resents SCOURGE as leader.”

Robot Mode
Packaged in robot mode, Axer is a repaint of the Generation 2 toy Road Pig. A round window cut out of the bubble on the box allows the customer to try out the light-up feature by pressing on his windshield. He is mostly black with various silver and gold highlights along with dark blue hips. Axer stands at 4 ¼” tall. Pressing the windshield or the front tire against his torso will activate the light-up function of his cannon.

Transformation
Transformation is not that hard. It’s interesting to note that there is no difficulty rating on the packaging at all as opposed to the other Robots in Disguise toys. Raise the windshield and the front tire so the tabs in the windshield meet with the slots in the tire assembly. Rotate the lower left arm around 180 degrees. You will need to do the same with the right arm, but the wiring for the cannon gets in the way. So, as you’re bringing the arms around to the back of the robot, rotate the right arm as you did the left. The fists should now be in place to grasp the small tabs on the back of the hips. Rotate the rear tire around so that it’s in-between the legs. Bring the legs together and push them back towards the bike to form the storage unit.

Motorcycle Mode
In motorcycle mode, Axer is 4 ½” in length. According to the licensing information on the inside of the box, he is a Harley Davidson make, but it’s unsure as to the model. The light up feature still works by pressing on a small button on the dashboard. The kickstand assists in standing Axer up in this mode and can be easily folded up when he’s riding the open roads.

Sideways
Autobot Scout
Strength - 4
Intelligence - 6
Speed - 6
Endurance - 5
Rank - 6
Courage - 8
Fireblast - 6
Skill - 8

Tech Specs
“SIDEWAYS was recruited from Cybertron when FORTRESS MAXIMUS was discovered on Earth. This conscientious, ninja-like warrior races to battle in his newly adopted sports bike disguise exceeding speeds of 250mph. His lightning-fast moves and energon buzzsaw allow him to get in and out of many a situation. Mysterious and silent, he reveals little about himself except a fierce drive to confront the enemy and quickly return to Cybertron.”

Motorcycle Mode
Unlike Axer, Sideways comes packaged in his motorcycle form, which, according to the licensing indicia on the box, is a Yamaha motorcycle of unknown model. He is primarily yellow with black and gray detailing. Measuring at just a hair over 5” in length, Sideways also makes use of a kickstand to help him stand tall in this form. With the press of the gray button in-between his handlebars, the “exhaust” on the left side of the bike lights up.

Transformation
As with his Decepticon counterpart, Sideways’ transformation is not too difficult. Remove the left paneling and extend the seat area back. Rotate the middle of the undercarriage to the left by 90degrees. Push the robot chest back into the cycle and spin the waist a half-circle. Take the wheel section with the kickstand and turn it so the arms faces down, separate the legs, flip up the feet and flip down the gray panel on his chest. The paneling can be attached to his right arm. To cut down on the restrictions the wire may place on his arm’s range of motion, place the wise between the wheel and shoulder joint.

Robot Mode
In robot mode, Sideways stands at 4 ¼” with black as his primary color. The yellow now highlights his chest and arms with the gray wheel spokes and chest paneling finishing off the color scheme. His laser saw can be lit up by pressing the same gray button on his back. He’s articulated at the neck, shoulders, elbows, waist, hips, knees, and toes. Unfortunately, due to the design of his long lower legs, it can be difficult to get the full range of motion out of his legs.

Overall
This set is a worthy addition to the Robots in Disguise line of toys. Considering these were two of the first few Transformers toys to feature the ball-socket articulation that made the Beast Wars and Robots in Disguise lines such successes, they fit in quite nicely with X-Brawn, Sky-Byte and the rest.

Thanks go to Benson Yee of Ben's World of Transformers for the pictures.
