Darkstream - PCC - Figure

Darkstream

Rounding out the latest 2pk PCC release wave, we take a look at Darkstream (the repaint of Skyburst) and Razorbeam (the minicon from Smolder). Skyburst got a mediocre score on his review, will Darkstream be any better?

Bio

Even for most of the top Decepticon aces, low-altitude air combat is difficult and dangerous, but it's where Darkstream excels. He prefers being close to the ground, where he can trick pursuing craft into a crash. His partner Razorbeam just makes him better at cutting dangerous maneuvers even closer.

Commander Mode

I will give credit to one thing. The colors bestowed on Darkstream look good. The forearms and lower legs are painted in crimson red, with some orange thrown in on the shins. The upper arms and thighs are black, and the chest is done in white with orange accents. A much better palette of color versus Skyburst.

Razorbeam

Razorbeam also gets a nice update, using a navy blue getup this time around. Where this figure suffers is with the 'partnership' Because the minicon port is on Darkstream's back, this makes Razorbeam almost useless in his armor mode. Worse yet, the pegs on Darkstream's hands are too big to wield Razorbeam in his axe mode. Therefore, you end up feeling cheated a bit.

Articulation

Feet:Stationary
Knees: Pin hinge, 75 degree bend. Pinned above knee for unlimited lower leg rotation.
Hips: Dual pin hinges, 120 degree bend and 90 degree spread
Waist:Stationary
Shoulders:Ball joint, unlimited rotation and 90 degree spread
Elbows:Ball joint, 90 degree bend and unlimited rotation
Head:Stationary

Arms are still fragile. Otherwise, decent articulation.

Commander Mode Specs

Height:4.5in/114.3mm
Width:2.88in/73.2mm
Depth:1.5in/38.1mm
Supplied accessories:N/A

Transformation

Commander to Vehicle Mode

Identical to Skyburst

Alt Mode

Darksteam's colors continue to work well in jet mode. The body is mostly white, with orange wings and stabilizers. The 3pt landing gear is also a nice touch for a Scout class figure.

However, you still get that nagging feeling that this is a Legend KO. The transformation is simple, even by Scout standards.

Fortunately, Razorbeam has much more usability in Darkstream's jet mode. While doing nothing for aerodynamics, the three barrel cannon does give him the offensive edge he lacked in robot mode.

Alt Mode Specs

Length: 5in/127mm
Wingspan:3.88in/98.6in
Height:1.62in/41.4mm
Wheels: 3, molded and retractable
Detailed cockpit:N/A

Transformation

From Commander to Combiner Mode

Identical to Skyburst.

Combiner Mode

Darkstream's combiner mode is stable, so can be a good asset depending on the drones used. The coloration, like the other 2 modes, is also an improvement on Skyburst. That's not to say this is a figure that should be hunted down. It's still mediocre at best, and suffers a black eye due to the lack of interactivity with his minicon partner in robot mode.

Combiner Mode Specs

Height:7.38in/187.4mm
Width:6.5in/165.1mm
Depth:2in/50.8mm
Supplied accessories:N/A

Verdict

Commander Mode: Good colors, but so-so articulation. Can't properly use minicon.
Alt Mode:Over-simple alt mode made livable by having good markings.
Razorbeam:A good minicon spoiled by having no way to help his partner in robot mode.
Combiner Mode:Does make a good combiner chest.
Overall:Even as a repaint, this mold just can't quite hack it.

Class:Scout 2pk

MSRP:$10

It must be time for this week's Power-Core re-paints. Who do I have to buy now? Seriously, when is this going to end? I have the feeling that these will end up being like the Action-Masters of days-of-old. Everyone thought they were stupid and passed on them, now they are waaaayyy sought after. ... read more

Saw him and passed him up at Walmart, decided on getting Windburn instead since I haven't seen Sledge yet

Ah, and there is where you see the issue. Darkray fill fit in Darkstream's hand because his peg is slightly fatter. But Darkstream didn't come packaged with Darkray, he came with Razorbeam. And the handle on Razorbeam's axe is not fat enough to securely peg in Darkstream's hand.

Darkstream? I guess he should drink more water.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "slop;" have you tried putting, say, Darkray/Caliburst in Darkstream's hand? I think that would work a lot better and would be better matched...

Too bad Darkstream kinda blows, because the minicon looks rad. I love the purple-ish blue color, and this is the best of the PCC minicons yet.

Actually, it's a little of both. If you put the axe handle in Darkstream's hands, there is noticeable slop.

The problem as I understand it is not that Skyblast/Darkstream's hand peg holes are too big, it's that they aren't deep enough, a problem shared with Huffer/Crankcase, Double Clutch and possibly some of the other Wave 2's. I probably, if I had any interest in Darkstream, would swap ... read more
