Ultra Magnus Forced Fusion - RID - TV Show

Yes, that's right folks. FUSHION.

How do you even SAY that? "FUSH-ee-on"? "Fuh-SHYON?" Primus H. Prime.

I guess that answers any questions about whether the "Sideburn" from "Sideburn's Obsession" is the "real" spelling. Yes it is - since the translators have been working in AFRIKAANS this whole damn time.

And it's a cryin' shame this ep was besmirched so quickly out of the gate, since the rest was pretty enjoyable. Best ep I've seen in quite a while, in fact. (Sky-Byte irritated me as usual in some scenes, but at least he had a mini-rhyming frenzy. "Armoirs, budoirs, old cars." Heh. Hm.)

Okay, a rhyming spasm. But his ridiculous, Jabberjawing cartoonery was limited to about a scene and a half, and Kelly was mercifully absent (though I actually would have appreciated seeing here on a doomed island cruise boat, talking about the nice "three-hour tour").

Moreover, Ultra Magnus continues to be an enjoyably single-minded jackass, which adds a nice, juicy new dimension to the otherwise buddy-buddy Autobot troops. The animation seemed above par, especially during the opening Prime/Magnus fight. It was nice to see someone finally take some real damage, even being shown recuperating later.

And on that subject: First, why the hell did the Autobots leave him alone?! Prime's troops multiply like rabbits every two episodes, but they can't even spare _Side Burn_ as a bodyguard? What in the world were they DOING that whole time? Megs, Sky-Byte, and the 'Cons were all obviously occupied with the engagements we saw, so who was left? The Preds? O, the havok a mischievous trio of woodland creatures can spread! T-AI: "The roots and berries of the world are in peril! Battle protocol! Autobot Brothers! Spychangers! Build Team! Wrecker Hook! Skid-Z! Fortress Max-- uh, wait, he may not even exist yet."

Second, as intimidating a force as the Decepticons were (and it was impressive seeing them coolly storm the beach), WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST KILL PRIME?!! Even after Magnus appeared, they let the two 'Bots have a nice little kaffeeklatsch in the fire. Like every idiotic, egomaniacal villain, apparently Megatron prefers his nemesis suffer a slow, lingering, mellow death that gives him ample opportunity for escape.

On that note, I was _very_ impressed with how they "resolved" the Magnus/Prime conflict. I was so disappointed when Magnus gave his change-of-heart speech, which was exactly what I was expecting from the end of this two-parter. But as soon as he called Prime "gullible," my faith in RiD was restored. The inner conflict, especially Magnus's belief in his control of Omega Prime, was just what I had hoped for.

Omega Prime's voice sounds a little too goonily heroic for my tastes. But maybe that'll change. (Say, did it seem like the Commandos' voices were different than before? I remember Ro-Tard having a more Tow-Line-ish drawl. Which I'm just tickled to see disappear, if that's the case.)

The post-commercial end scene seemed especially short. Plus the sudden jump between Omega Prime having defeated the 'Cons and Ultra Magnus flying away makes me wonder if something got cut.

And finally... the G1 refs. So Vector Sigma, the Matrix, and the AllSpark have all been equated now in Prime's descriptions. Rather neat little trinity, if you think about it: The AllSpark being the distant God-the-Father, VS its central physical manifestation (the Son), and the Matrix a more personal extension of that (Holy Spirit). But now I'm reading too much into it...

Alpha Trion! Creating Optimus and Magnus at the same moment! While others have tried to suggest that this fits with "War Dawn," I'm skeptical. For one thing, it seems to me that if Alphie had created two Autobots simultaneously, we would've seen them both. The feeling I got from that old episode was that Prime was the only one of his kind at that point.

Also, I have a very hard time believing that this is the same Magnus from G1. Maaaybe I could buy a character shift from arrogant prick to contented second banana (which will probably happen by the end of this series), but not the other way around. I can't imagine what would put the unflappable G1 UM over the edge like this. (And all this talk of the civil war having ended means RiD doesn't fit in between G1 season 2 and the Movie.)

So anyway. Those are my words.

- Jackpot (And Autobots shake with their left hands.)
