Optimus Prime - RiD - Figure

A few years ago, a friend of mine said that the original Optimus Prime would make for a great fire truck. Somebody must have heard him, because the Robots in Disguise incarnation of Prime is all that and a bag of chips.

Vehicle Mode
In vehicle mode, Optimus Prime measures in right around a foot in length, 3 1/4 inches in width, and 4 1/2 inches in height. The ladder rotates 360 degrees and can be expanded to a massive 20 1/4 inches. The front section of the ladder also has two hose nozzles that flip out at the press of a button. Unscrewing the middle section of the top of the cab and placing 2 AA batteries inside will enable the sound and light gimmicks. By pressing the button in-between the two light bars, you get 1 of 5 sounds at random along with the flashing of the lights.

Transformation
Transformation can be a bit tricky the first couple times around and since he has a variety of forms, I'll be as brief as possible.

Small Robot Mode
Separate the front cab from the rest of the truck (the rest of the truck becomes the battle station). Flip the wheels around so they cover the front windows slightly, flip the front window section down 180 degrees and rotate each leg 90 degrees. Open the back panels to reveal the robot feet and flip them down, closing the panels afterwards. Bring the topsides down and extend the panels to reveal the robot arms to position as you see fit. Push the chest down and voila! Optimus is ready for battle.

Optimus Prime measures 8 inches tall and is articulated in the elbows, shoulders, waist, neck, hips, knees, and ankles. He bears a striking resemblance to the Optimus Prime of old. The chest paneling has the same two blue sections like the original Prime did and the face is a streamlined version of the Autobot leader of old. He also has a small pistol to utilize in his battles with the enemy. Also, by adding the bottom rear sections of the back half of the fire truck assembly, Prime can have a 6-shot missile launcher on each shoulder.

Battle Station
This is a mishmash of leftover sections from the truck. It stands 14 inches tall and has enough firepower to level a small Barbie house. There are 2 laser cannon batteries on either side of the base (for a total of 14 lasers total), the two previously mentioned hose nozzles, and four missiles that can be fired from the back side of the ladder/tower at the press of a button. The openings at the base of the station are wide enough for the Spychangers to race through.

Now for the fun!

Super Robot Mode
First off, take the Battle Station apart, raise the chest on Prime to hide his robot head, fold the light bars down and extend the shoulder joints. Secure the missile launchers that were used for Optimus onto his feet by opening the gray panels and pulling out the gray assemblies that attach to his shins. Attach the midsections of the rear truck to the shoulders and push the shoulder back into place. On the front-most section of the truck panels, flip the thumbs back into position and rotate the panels so that the double-barreled cannons are facing toward the hands. Attach these gauntlets to the corresponding arms on the robot. Take the ladder section and attach it to the top of the robot, revealing the robot head and snap the chest panel into place. You can now lower the ladder and the robot torso.

Super Optimus Prime towers at a massive 10 inches (not counting the section of the ladder that extends past the top of his head. The pistol can be placed onto his left shoulder, near the head and the small panel where the Autobot symbol rests on can be opened to reveal what appears to be the Matrix. Prime has 21 points of articulation. The ladder can also be positioned behind his right shoulder and brought around for use as a cannon. The nice thing is that he can hold onto this huge weapon and not fall over as I was expecting. Another nice thing about Prime (in any of his forms) is the amount of detail and effort that went into painting that detail.

Overall
Optimus Prime is a beautiful toy that is loaded with play value. I highly recommend this toy to any fan of the Transformers.
