Sideswipe - Generation 2 - Figure

I bought this fellow secondhand a few weeks back. I really like the original Sideswipe mold, and the thought of him in black sounded good as well.

For G2, Sideswipe is a black Lamborghini, with chrome hubcaps, a red front bumper and vehicle interior, and lime green decals on the roof, doors, spoiler and headlights. The spoiler decals say 'Sideswipe', and the doors have a large SS on either side with Sideswipe in tiny letters inside the SS. Flip the car over and you'll see a lot of red and white. It seems that the black and red were pretty much switched for the G2 issue of SS. G2 is red where G1 was black, and vice versa. It's a slick car, and all the more so for being a recognizable real-world vehicle.

In addition to the color changes, there is a minor mold change as well. The roof of the car now sports a hole where the missile launcher can sit in vehicle mode. Unlike the G1 SS, this fellow has a huge, lime green missile launcher and an even longer missile. And it fires as well, again unlike my G1 Sideswipe's missile, which just sits there in the launcher.

Transformation is similar to the Spychangers, with a few additions. Pull down the back of the car to form the legs. The rear separates, and his feet flip out. Pulling down the rear of the car also reveals a G2 Autobot insignia, and the word Autobot above Sideswipe's waist, though when the hood is folded down, this is covered over. Pull the tires out to form the shoulders and separate the arms from the torso. Fold the hood down to form the chest, and flip the head up. The greatly oversized launcher can fit in his fist, though on mine the small post is broken off, and I have yet to repair it.

I think this version looks every bit as good as the original. He has the usual early articulation, which is to say his arms can move, but not the legs. The arms move at the shoulders and elbows, and the head can look up and down due to the transformation. He's probably only four inches tall or so, but that's about typical for the Diaclone based early TFs.

G2 Sideswipe is a nice addition to my collection. The only downside is that the missile launcher looks absurdly large on such a small figure. And it's bright green! However, G2 Sideswipe is much less expensive than the original, and is quite a bargain because of it. Pick him up if you get the chance.
