Rhinox & Ironhide - Armada - Figures

Considering he was never featured on any show, Transmetal Rhinox sure is popular with the good folks at Hasbro. His third incarnation not only comes with he spiffiest colour scheme yet, but also some remoulding and a little buddy.

ARMORHIDE

Vehicle Mode: A recolour of the Adventure Team's Iceberg, Armorhide is a Snowcat. Mainly cold blue with light blue windows, black crane and machine parts, and metallic silver plow and treads (RID Armorhide's Arctic cousin, anyone?), he's 6 cm(2.4") long with a 4.5 cm(1.8") wide plow. His faction symbol is on his roof and his Powerlinx socket is in the middle of his underside. His plow is serrated, his treads are nicely detailed and slightly rubbery to the touch, his crane swings out on a ball joint, and he has large thrusters at his rear, which make him a neat jetpack for bigger TFs. Pushing him along on a smooth surface causes the crane to move back and forth and the plow blades to open and close slightly. Neat.

Transformation: Pull down the legs, open up the cockpit, and flip out the head.

Robot Mode: At about 6.5 cm(2.6") tall, Armorhide is one of the bigger Mini-Cons. His head is mostly blue with yellow eyes and a black forehead. He's in the mid-range of Mini-Con poseability, with joints at the shoulders, waist, and hips.

Overall, a good Mini-Con toy, and with a more appropriate "icy" colour scheme than Iceberg's.

RHINOX

Rhino Mode: Based on his lengthy front horn, I'd say Rhinox is a Black Rhino (and no, they're not really black). From snout to tail tip, he measures 13 cm(5.1") long and stands 10 cm(4") tall at the horn. His main colours are meaty pink, metallic silver, and brownish-gray, with bright yellow eyes, blue, brown, and dark yellow accents, metallic silver nails and teeth, and gray horns. Looks nicer than his original gray and blue-green version, and MUCH nicer than the blue and neon green Fox Kids! version. His rear legs are somewhat puny, but he makes up for it with his ginormous front ones. And with those perked ears and that fearsome snarl on his face, he looks ready to impale a Decepticon or two on his serrated horn. He's got ten points of articulation in this mode, all in his limbs.

To make him compatible with the rest of the Armada line, Rhinox has two dark yellow dead hardpoints mounted on top of his rear legs. The painted dark yellow streaks radiating from the hardpoints make it seem like Rhinox is leaking lubricant or something (heh). Armorhide doesn't look too good attached to him, but Broadside and Fetch of the Night Attack Team look good.

Vehicle Mode: Flip out the skis on Rhinox's front limbs, fold up his rear legs and swing them out and down, and you have a a cross between a robotic rhino and a snowmobile, making Armorhide quite the appropriate choice for a partner. The moulded treads are very nice, but unfortunately, the Rhinomobile lacks wheels and can't roll. It can, however, pop wheelies as described in the Transmetal version's tech spec.

Transformation: Decidedly more complex than any Armada Supercon, to the point where fans may want to use the instructions.

Robot Mode: Rhinox stands about 12.5 cm(5") tall at the head. His physique can best be described as "badass." His head is brownish-gray with a dark yellow face, bright yellow eyes, and metallic silver crest, chin, and teeth. His expression is no less ferocious than the one he had in rhino mode. The front of his torso is airbrushed dark yellow with a blue circle on his left chest panel. Whereas he was all mechanical in beast mode, his chest and upper arms are sculpted to resemble pebbled rhino skin. His chest panels open up to reveal a moulded Autobot symbol in place of the rub sticker found on his previous versions.

In this mode, Rhinox is articulated at the head, shoulders, elbows(ball and swivel), hips, knees, and ankles, although you have to deploy his skis in order for his knees and ankles to function properly. His horns become a handheld scythe weapon. His PX pegs end up on his backpack, so you can still attach Mini-Cons as extra weaponry.

Overall, Susp Sez: If you've already got TM Rhinox and the Adventure Team and aren't big on recolours, you probably won't be impressed with this one. And even if you don't own the previous versions, you may still find that, compared to original Armada Supercons, Rhinox seems kinda small for your buck. However, as a stand alone toy, Rhinox is quite nice. Great colours, good rhino mode, satisfactory snowmobile mode, powerful-looking and poseable robot mode. 9/10

Susp, although, I do miss him being a Maximal

"Autobot tech is different from ours. Mixing the two is . . . tricky." -Rhinox
