Dead End - Alternators - Figure

Now this is how a repaint/remold ought to be done! Same car, different model. Same basic robot, different details and head. A drastically different paint scheme from the original. All of this combines to make a figure that feels like a new toy rather than a modified one.

Dead End is, as you probably know, the first Decepticon in the Alternators line. I think he was originally planned to be Sunstreaker, because he’s remolded from Sideswipe, and because he has Sunstreaker’s head! It’s a bit odd, but once you get past that, he’s a fine figure. Oh, and his color scheme is closer to fellow Stunticon Wildrider’s than Dead End’s.

So he’s a mix of character references rather than a strictly faithful update like Hound or Tracks… so is he worth buying? Absolutely. The articulation is very nice, apart from limited knee movement due to the front side fenders of the auto mode on the back of the legs. They fixed this when Tracks was designed, but it’s still in place here on Dead End. There are still plenty of good poses to be had. The arms are very mobile in almost all directions, the waist rotates, the ankles move in and out and the knees do bend slightly. The head is on a ball joint and moves very well. I love the partially articulated hands as well. They are much nicer than molded fists.

The color scheme, despite being off a bit from the original figure, is still excellent. Mostly black of course, with a nice dark gold or bronze color for the face and some of the other details. The red is a darker shade as well. Small areas of silver and bright purple jump out all the more for the high contrast they provide. Like the other Alternators, this low-key color scheme is one that I enjoy and prefer to the bright primary colors on the main line.

The black and silver Dodge Viper is a car that looks so sharp, I almost didn’t want to transform it to robot mode. The amber headlights and windshield look a bit odd since I’ve never seen such a thing on a real car, but aesthetically, they look great. Turn the car over and though you see part of the legs, nothing stands out drastically as ‘robot parts’. The interior with seats, steering wheel and full dashboard details is amazingly well done. This is a car that is disguised inside and out.

I haven’t found an Alternator yet that isn’t outstanding. Dead End is outnumbered pretty badly by Autobots, but with his miserable outlook on life, that probably suits him. Absolutely recommended.
