Checkpoint Prowl - Energon - Figures

At last…. A reason to go to K-mart. While the molds are the same, the new paintjob is worth the trip….. at least in one mode or the other.

Vehicle mode:

The mold hasn’t changed any… Checkpoint is still a rocket powered semi with a hook on the back for the unrevealed trailer. Now he’s a rocket powered police semi… ewww cool. I think Downshift would’ve made a better swat vehicle. For the repaint the red had been changed to white and the gun medal to black. Gone are the gold flames, or any gold really, replaced with yellow and black checkerboard stripes. The gold on the top of the spoiler has been replaced by blue and red paint representing lights. Below the lights is a stamped big honkin autobot symbol. On the spoiler SVAT……. What’s that? Well it’s SWAT with the powerlinx point on the W. This is the weaker form as far as I’m concerned. I like it but I find to many things I don’t like: the autobot symbol is too big, SVAT, and those goofy yellow and black stripes.

Prowl’s mold hasn’t changed either, instead of being all blue with white trim, he’s black with more white. He also has painted headlights in the front fender. His tires are now black instead of navy blue. Aside from the red in his faction symbol and red light on top he’s very monochromatic. this guy looks best in vehicle mode.

Robot mode:

This is where Checkpoint looks the best. The same colors are still swapped so no real surprises. Except the orange that is now showing on Rodimus is now gray. For some this is good, I personally don’t care, I liked orange perfectly well but it wouldn’t have been right on Checkpoint. The only thing that is shocking is how much better the huge ass autobot symbol looks on his chest than on the spoiler. It looks better because it’s not as hey look at this… the white outlines blends with the white chest instead of glaring on the black spoiler. I’ve found that the black paint holds up better than the gold. On Rodimus the gold is all scratched, especially on the belt buckle and spoiler. The swap in paint was a good thing. I don’t know if I got a bum Rodimus but the orange foot doohickeys fall off easily and won’t hold up the weight to stand very well. So far on Checkpoint this hasn’t been a problem. The doohickeys are much tighter.

Checkpoint looks good as pant for Towline and either for Downshift and Prowl.

Prowl still hasn’t changed, aside from the painted headlight on his foot he looks like the same square-pants prowl. He looks a little more pessimistic or negative in attitude. If you like Prowl, good for you you'll love this version too. I really didn't like him a lot. He was better than 75% of Armada but mediocre' for energon.

Prowl really doesn’t look good combined with anyone but Checkpoint or the other Prowl.

Overall:

Are they worth $19.95? probably not, it depends on your opinion of the original mode. If you shop were deluxe are $8.99 they’re gonna be a rip-off especially if you’ve been buying the two packs for that price. I don’t feel cheated though, I really liked the originals. They are unique and a decent recolor. How many have there been of the crappy Armada Sideswipe? The only figure I’d like to see repainted even more would be Towline or maybe Downshift. The price is the weakest point… the price and Prowl, it should either be $13.00 for both or $11.00 for Checkpoint alone.
