Pepsi Convoy - Genteration 1 - Figure

Name: Pepsi Convoy
Series: Transformers
Faction: Cybertron
Size: Ultra
Packaging: Window box packaging
Reissue: December 2005
Accessories: Rifle, two fists, trailer, sticker sheet and biocard
Variations: Pepsi Optimus Prime (1985)

Introduction:

"Pepsi Convoy rolls in action to quench all sentient beings" -- A catchy slogan for Transformers toy that endorse a soft drink. Originally Hasbro released a Pepsi Optimus Prime in the 80s, but he only had a "Pepsi" logo applied at both sides of the trailer. This time around Takara made it possible by making Convoy actually endorse Pepsi!

Let's break it down shall we...

Vehicle mode:

Pepsi Convoy is no different from its original predecessor. How many times had Takara & Hasbro reissued this tractor cab? Many variations or color that was released with this mold. This time around the truck has Pepsi color painted all over it. Instead of having stickers applied tampo symbols of the Autobot insignia & Pepsi are applied. Detailed "Pepsi" has been applied in his front bumper plate. Replacing the dark blue colors with Pepsi signiture blue, and you can't miss that certain metallic color.

Transformation:

After seeing so many G1 Convoy's around you won't miss a beat transforming this guy. I admit this is my first G1 Convoy, and I'm not ashamed about it being a lemon for some. He doesn't carry his original trailer with him though, but that's just Prime.

Robot Mode:

Like any G1 Convoy he has the Pepsi globe logo painted both sides of his head, since he is the only one that has it. The head, two fists, and legs that has his original blue colors where repainted to its Pepsi mettalic blue. I can't argue with that even the forearms that was red before was also recolored. Well with the exception of the surface of his arms, where you apply the stickers. The red color we're familiar with is brightened. He still has diecast parts like his toes and the frame that opens up his chest. I noticed that both of his legs where the exhaust used to applied with stickers are now molded grills. Pretty much still a G1 Convoy that I've been wanting to have since Transformers came out, but I just came out short that I got this version.

Toy Gimmick:

He's a Pepsi truck and that's his gimmick. He can carry a 500ml or three cans of Pepsi in his trailer, and I just noticed one thing about the trailer. You'll see the only part that's new is the flat bed part, where he can carry the Pepsi bottle or the cans.

The black part where the axle and wheel is attached is from his original trailer. This mold was taken from the G2 Optimus Prime, and its copyright is in the year 1992.

One additional gimmick is the bottom part of the trailer, which can hold the two fists and rifle so that you wont loose them.

Packaging:

G1 classic window type packaging with a new twist in Pepsi colors, and has a brief history on how both Takara/Hasbro and Pepsi came out with this promotion.

Overall Rating:

The cab is still nostalgic. Its a cool gimmick bringing the concept of having Convoy promote a softdrink with a different trailer. When I got mine I brought it at the office, where I just put my non-spilled proof mug and my Pepsi Max standing there. I guess it depends on the fan reaction with Takara having released this version of Convoy. Personally its nice to have one add to your collection. Something unique from the usual Transformers that I got.

Pepsi Convoy gets 8/10 robot points and I can't argue with that. No sugar trust me.
