Deluxe Jazz - Movie - Review

The name Jazz hasn't appeared on a TF figure in quite some time. It is now being resurrected for the movie. Jazz is just like his namesake in the G1 continuity. A sports car that is in tune with Earth culture and with unwavering courage in battle.

Alt Mode

Jazz has the alt mode of a 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP. He looks silver, but can come off looking beige under the right light. The details are all there, including the air vents behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels. The tire setup is an improvement over Bumblebee's. However, the rear end is a mess comprised of exposed joints.

Jazz comes with a weapon that clips on to his rear spoiler. The instructions show the weapon mounting to face back, but it can also be mounted to face forward. This weapon (listed as a sword, even though there is a sight on it) has a 2 stage telescoping feature that extends the blade (or barrel?) to the front windshield.

Transformation

His transformation is interesting. The whole bottom of the car past the hood swings downward to form the legs. His automorph gimmick is when the roof is flushed against the back, his head is exposed. Transformation is simple, but converting the hood into his arms will throw you at first.

Robot Mode

His Robot mode comes off looking short in more ways than one. More color shows up in this mode, including some copper. An Autobot symbol can be seen on his waist. While the blue piping effect of his visor is absolutely wicked, the arms are absolutely hideous. I thought when I saw the first pictures of Jazz that he was mistransformed and that something wasn't being extended properly. I was wrong. He does come off looking short and pudgy.

Points of articulation is as follows. Feet: Rivet joint, 135 degree rotation. Knees: Pin joint, limited vertical and unlimited horizontal rotation. Hips: Recessed ball joint, 90 degree vertical and 45 degree horizontal rotation. Shoulders: Pin/Hinge joints, unlimited horizontal and 90 degree vertical rotation. Elbows: None. Head: Ball joints, unlimited horizontal and 30 degree vertical rotation. The knees have good joints, but there's way too much kibble to use them. Being the arms are nothing but a folded up hood, there are no elbows. His hands consist of 3 tiny claws. The weapon can peg to the inside of his arm to make a somewhat seamless arm weapon.

Too bad a Voyager mold won't be showing up on shelves, this one leaves me disappointed. While the alt mode is nice and overall the robot mode isn't too bad, the articulation is at best abysmal. The proportions in robot mode don't do this figure must justice either.

My Score:
Unsung hero of the Autobots. This is a great figure-solid construction, easy conversion, and faithful to the G1 unofficial second in command of the Autobots. No parts that easily break or snap off, and easy to stand (those having trouble with this need to look at the underside of his feet. He has a folding stabiliser on the bottom of each one).

My Score:
The G1 paint job is very nice, especially in alt mode. It''s a real shame the basic mold was so spectacularly inept. I was pretty much lured in by the alt mode.

My Score:
It''s quite a cool toy, but the shield is kinda frustrating, when you mount it on the left shoulder it keeps spinning. I prefer to bend it upwards still hanging on the top of the car. There isn''t much knee articulation and those round things on the sides of his feet are annoying. I have the "exclusive" G1 deco Deluxe Jazz

hmmmmm the proportions on this thing make him look kinda stupid.... heh. pity that hasbro sucks at making these things look good even after 20 years....

My Score:
I don''t mind Jazz that much, but my biggest complaint is that you have to move the rear forearm panel out of the way so he can actually hold his stupid weapon. I''ve been mounting it on the rear spoiler ''shield'' on his shoulder instead.

My Score:
Jazz can''t stand up that easily. His color is dull gray and his arms are some what
jacked-up. No knee articulation. That is why I don''t like him.

My Score:
I love this guy. Don''t get me wrong, it''s an awful toy, but I really like him. The arms are a disaster, the boot of the car doesnt stay folded back in robot mode, the head is loose, the knees dont bend, and the paint is a bit haphazard... but I think he''s got a really complicated looking Robot mode and he has tons of charisma. As a toy, rubbish, but as a display piece, pretty cool

My Score:
this is the only deluxe figure i liked enough to buy (possibly barricade too). i totally understand why some hate it/parts of it. The knee joint is so hampered by the fixed doors on the thighs thats theres not a lot of posing however it can be posed to look quite animated, you just have to experiment with the arms in particular. The arms, well its a new idea and I think that the main flaw are the silly little claw hands. the only part of the figure that is really physically lacking is that very empty looking neck/shoulder area. The head is the best on any of the movie toys a lot of microman acroyear look going on there! Overall a strange quirky toy thats at least solid, the transformation is fairly complex and enjoyable. Some may also miss the automorph feature aside from the head, the front of the car extends forward and splits into 3 sections! flawed in many ways but i think the whole is greater than the sum of its odd parts.

I''ve seen quite a few photos of this guy now, and what I''m seeing that''s wrong with yours is that you haven''t extended his legs completely. Plus, he does have elbows. You''ve got them swung up as far as they go in these pictures. try bending them back and then whine to us about no elbows.

My Score:
Although he has many flaws, I think he may actually be one of my favorites of the movie figures, though that isn''t saying alot. His spindly arms and lack of a mid torso bother me, but otherwise he looks most transformery of the first wave of deluxe figs, though I am trying to track down a Wreckage, who looks good as well.

I love Jazz but after I bought this fig I was sooo disappointed. I think I''m actually going to take him back to the store :( Here''s to hoping they repaint him, give him a new head, and maybe call him Meister, just so the kiddies don''t get confused

My Score:
One of the very, very, very few figures I''m actually interested in, as he looks less alien and more like his G1 counterpart. I''ll probably pick him up when I have the means. Although, if a G1 version of this Jazz is coming out, I may wait.

There will be no Voyager Jazz. Just as there won''t be a Deluxe Ironhide.
In the movie line up, the voyagers are simply the larger bots (Blackout, Ironhide and Ratchet - and Prime and Megs, I guess)

I don''t think there is a Voyager Jazz. That''s either a typo in the system, or wishful thinkin on the part of Blitzwing.I like to read your reviews for figure judgement, man. But this time I''m going with Ben Yee''s review, Seibertron.com''s gallery, and my own feelings. I AM taking your advice on Wreckage, though (though that is mainly mine and my mate''s opinions.)
