Entertainment Weekly confirms that Hasbro has hired writer Akiva Goldsman to head up the writing team that will work on expanding the Transformers movie world into a broader cinematic franchise. CEO Brian Goldner revealed this in Hasbro's quarterly earnings conference call yesterday, and added that Transformers 5 is expected in 2017. A director is not mentioned, and while Michael Bay was named in connection with the project in rumors it's entirely logical that the financially successful director would be consulted on what "his" franchise would do next. Cinematic Universes are a Thing right now, with Marvel and Star Wars leading the way. Now, according to Deadline, Paramount is looking at their biggest movie property with an eye towards more varied (and frequent) releases. To that end they're enlisting writer Akiva Goldsman, whose credits range from the drama A Beautiful Mind to the well-received TV series Fringe ...to Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. This should be interesting. The story also hints that Michael Bay may unsurprisingly be returning for Transformers 5 after his current movie project - or at least that TF5 won't go ahead until that project is complete. MP-25 MASTERPIECE TRACKS - Next up in Takara’s amazing Masterpiece Series is the MP-25 Tracks! He transforms from Chevrolet Corvette to a great looking screen accurate robot. 2014 marks the 30th Anniversary of Hasbro’s TRANSFORMERS, which has been celebrated thus far with a blockbuster film and critically acclaimed comic series’ from IDW. But the party isn’t quite over as IDW still has some TRANSFORMERS debuts this year! The long-running TRANSFORMERS comic, which originally appeared in 1984, came to an epic conclusion as, TRANSFORMERS: Regeneration One by IDW reached its 100th issue!



The New York Times' Dealbook reports that Hasbro has ended talks with Dreamworks about the possibility of acquiring the company. The big kicker is said to have been a 5% drop in Hasbro's stock price when the acquisition rumor went public - significant because Hasbro was seeking to pay a combination of cash and company stock for the studio. Also, as some predicted, Disney seems not to have taken kindly to the idea of Hasbro buying their biggest animated competitor. Keep reading for more details!



CNBC raises an excellent point about the potential purchase of Dreamworks that we reported on earlier in the day. One of the reasons that people have felt a Hasbro/Disney merger was sensible and likely is how much of Hasbro's business is tied up with Disney's. Piper Jaffray Analyst Steph Wissink estimates that amount at between a quarter and a third of Hasbro's business... so how would that affect a potential purchase of Disney's chief competitor in the animated film trade? Deadline has posted a story that says Dreamworks Animation and Hasbro have begun talks about the possibility of a merger. The new family entertainment powerhouse would be called DreamWorks-Hasbro.

A new company called Play With This Too was formed recently, made up of several former Hasbro exployees. They plan a startup in February with a crowd sourced figure. The PWTT figure design, while not an homage to any existing Hasbro products, is made along similar ideas. There will be heroes and monsters. It will feature a 6 inch tall figures with reconfigurable armor and lots of 5mm ports. Released already is concept art for one of their heroic designs called Astroblast.



Deadline is reporting today that The Hub will soon be transitioning to primary control by Discovery, following acquisition of a portion of Hasbro's existing stake in the joint network venture. The network is expected to be rebranded as Discovery Family, joining a range of other specialty channels in Discovery's lineup. For more details, keep reading!



Box Office Mojo reports that James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has made a comeback and will surpass Transformers: Age of Extinction this weekend as the summer's top-grossing movie. Its estimated domestic take for the week is $17 million putting it at $251 million overall. This places it in third place just slightly behind The Lego Movie and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in the ranking of best domestic releases of the year.
