This year is the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration - the transfer of power from the shogunate to the Emperor of Japan - and TakaraTomy is collaborating with the celebration! First there are a pair of illustrations, including one of Optimus Prime as a key figure in the Bakumatsu, the period of civil war that led to the estabilishment of the Meiji government. Secondly, they've commissioned an actual, traditionally-made katana! Keep reading for images and a short history lesson.
The main point of interest is an Optimus Prime in golden samurai armor, meant to represent samurai Sakamoto Ryoma who negotiated a critical alliance between two traditionally hostile provinces. Megatron's identity is not clear from the articles, but it's possible he's one of the assassins who killed Sakamoto.
The katana will be shown at a variety of places in Japan, including the upcoming Wonder Festival Summer 2018, which happens this weekend, and the Tokugawa Shogunate Festival in Kochi Prefecture.
