Transformers Universe - The Past Presented

Every year Hasbro goes back to archives and comes back with a new take on some of their best molds from the past. This year was no exception with the introduction of the Transformers Universe a new line focused on bringing back figures from the past. These aint just a bunch of repainted toys. Hasbro actually has something planned for this line.

Michelle Fields, Director of boys toys marketing describes this curious new line as "A line of cool redeco characters from the past that are now coming together to battle in the same universe." The line is Hasbro's way of reintroducing figures from the past (G2, Beast Wars, Beast Machines and RiD) to new collectors, in this case Beast Wars and Beast Machines, as well as develop a vehicle that the BotCon comic series can adhere to. Michelle also said they plan to package the Transformers Universe (TFU) figures with CDROM that will include clips from Armada, theme music and a special comic. The TFU toys are scheduled for release in August 2003.

The Real Deal

According to Aaron Archer and 3H, the thinking is that if a character receives a name in the TRU, it is THAT character. This means that if its Silverbolt, it is indeed the Beast Wars/Beast Machines Silverbolt character we know. The same goes for Optimus Primal, Snarl and the other figures revealed thus far. The other big news that may not be immediately apparent to the fans, is the Transformers Universe will in-fact replace what is the now defunct Wreckers story line.

The Action Figures

Optimus Primal - $19.99 - There were rumors that the original Beast Wars Optimus Primal would return and boy has he. Painted up like an indian warier this guy looks like he's ready to do battle. I could not have imagined a Primal on maroon, red and yellow but this one totally works.

Razorclaw - $19.99 - We knew him as Tigerhawk in Beast Wars, the Vok fusion of Tigatron and Airazor. This intriguing character returns to the TF Universe this time with a deep dark motif that suggests there's something more ominous to this character's past than we know.

Silverbolt - $9.99 - One of the most liked characters and figures from Beast Wars was the Fuzor Silverbolt. The good news is he's returned in the Transformers Universe the not so good news is he's all purple. I'm not sure who's been picking the colors over there but this is a surprising theme for this character that I will assume is based on the Beast Machines character. One of the interesting changes made to the Silverbolt figure is the addition of an Autobot symbol on his chest.

Reptilion - $9.99 - Every now and then a figure is reintroduced in such a way that is gives the toy a whole new look. Reptilion is one of them. Based on the Beast Wars Transmetal Iguanus figure, Hasbro has redone this guy in a very attractive bronze/gold and day-glo green. If you never noticed this figure before, you will now.

Snarl - $9.99 - I was starting to think the TF universe was all about Beast Wars figures until we saw Snarl. This figure is a darker themed version of the same named Beast Machines figure. I was a fan of the original figure and was glad to see the toy getting more attention. This time he returns with black, gold and red color theme that is quite becoming of the majestic lion figure.
