Chinese Consider Shanghai Depiction In Revenge Insulting

By bwbm on Thursday, June 25, 2009

So it may not just be the people in the United States crying foul on Michael Bay for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as now some citizens of China are doing the same over the depiction of Shanghai in the film.

The Chinese have flooded the web denouncing how Shanghai, one of the top cities in the country, appears very drab in the film, reports People Daily Online.

Shanghai, China, as depicted in Revenge of the Fallen

They also consider the bombing in one scene to be "an insult to China."

Paramount Pictures International is deciding whether or not to cut the bombing scene when the film is released on June 26th, but many Chinese believe it is simply not enough.

They believe that it would be a major blow to the city if the rest of the world sees Shanghai dilapidated as the film depicts.

The paper does offer some arguing points, though, including that the only way to get past this is:
reform and construct [our] cities. Forbidding others to talk about our deficiencies and pretending to be perfect while we are not is only fooling ourselves.

Dude, nobody is insulting China. How in the world does a scene that depicts a battle at night in an EVACUATED industrial area equate to trying to make a country look bad, or shabby or whatever it is that supposedly making people mad? It's silly, that's all most people are saying. Nobody i... read more

Maybe the criticism itself wasn't invented out of thin air. I don't think they are jumping on any bandwagon. Granted, China has a horrific record in regards to human rights violations--which should never be overlooked, and their issues with pollution are apparently incredibly huge, and th... read more

Holy slag....lookout folks, here comes the Bandwagon, jump on it quick like every other dolt in the world. I mean, I could understand Transformers fans, movie critics and such nitpicking the movie for its problems. But groups inventing them outta thin air like this? How many people really gave th... read more

Well, it seems like it's the "in" thing to do in the world these days to take shots at the U.S. whenever possible. So I'm sure that has it's place in all of this. And like it's been said, controversy has a funny way of boosting ticket sales. So if anyone is really bothere... read more

Apparently there is quite a rush for various groups to call foul on this movie for one reason or another. The kids issue is another one. Parents don't have any more right to cry foul about it than anyone else. Every film gets a rating along with plenty of easy to find information about why it ... read more

Is China's criticism (overly-sensitive or not) of Shanghai's portrayal of the movie necessarily a criticism of the movie itself, or just a convenient reason to criticize America? Because I'd think any Western portrayal of anything having to do with China in any light that could be constr... read more

ugh this so reminds me of the complaints that sprung up about 300's depiction of the Persian empire...another great movie. lets just enjoy the film for what it is and not go too into it.

Whoever thought about that is just jealous cuz Bay is from the U.S. and they can't make great movies like that. This is a sci-fi movie dammit, not a true documentary of the freakin place.
