Sneak Peek of Universe Classics 2.0 Wave 1

Hasbro has just given us a great treat: a sneak peek of the Transformers: Universe Classics 2.0 ultra and deluxe class figures. The provided images are the gray prototypes and include deluxes Sunstreaker, Prowl, and Tankor; and ultras Powerglide and Onslaught with commentary for each figure by the toy line's lead designer Bill Rawyler.

The Transformers: Universe Classics 2.0 line will hit stores in August 2008.

Transformers Universe Classic Deluxe
SUNSTREAKER

Rawley: For Sunstreaker, the design team sought to create a cool concept sports car that was reminiscent of the character’s G1 form. In robot mode, the team modernized Sunstreaker’s head from G1, but originally weren’t able to achieve the proper fit to allow for the toy’s conversion. A final change to convert part of the “ear” panels allowed the team to capture the look it desired.

PROWL

Rawley: In robot mode, it was important that Prowl have his shoulder mounted missile launchers, as he did back in G1. The design team also worked with TakaraTomy to create an innovative head reveal as part of the conversion process.

TANKOR

Rawley: This triple-change converts to a robot, airplane and tanker truck. Originally planned as Octane, the team ended up having to change the name to Tankor. Like Prowl, this character also features an exciting head reveal. Painted with all the details, this guy looks like a mean Decepticon ready to blast and cut something to shreds.

Transformers Universe Classic Ultra
POWERGLIDE

Rawley: For Powerglide there were a few important design considerations. First, the design team wanted Powerglide’s head to still have a dome-like point, but in a more updated way. Second, his wings needed to be in his shoulders as they originally were in G1. To stay true to the realistic nature of the Classic Series, the deco will be more silver than red, but with multiple red cues to connect to Powerglide's original look.

ONSLAUGHT

Rawley: Bill chose Onslaught because he always loved his design and the two large signature barrels on the character’s back. The design team worked to retain that very characteristic silhouette in this new Ultra scale version of Onslaught. In choosing a vehicle mode, design went with a cool S.W.A.T. Urban assault vehicle to set it apart from the tanks in other Transformers product lines. The vehicle choice and theme lent itself to the creation of a riot shield in robot mode. The final version does an excellent job recalling the G1 characters the design team grew up with.

Besides,we just want powerglide,not a scalemodel.

Now if only I could move those giant breastlamps elsewhere in the bot mode... :schin

So, looking at the colored pics... I dislike the Ultras. For various reasons.

Onslaught looks pretty good in robot mode. Like I said before, a wee bit generic, but pretty good. But his alt-mode... awful. Well done, maybe, but it's just an ugly vehicle. I feel like someone chopped off the front of Scattorshot and called it a vehicle. Add in the fact that apparantly Ultras have electronic lights and sound and I'm turned right off.

Powerglide starts with one strike against him for being an Ultra in the first place... he's a damn minibot. Doesn't make any sense for him to be an Ultra. But I'd forgive that in an instant if he were an awesome toy... but he doesn't look like it. His plane mode has enought undercarriage kibble to make Movie Starscream look good, and his robot mode is decidedly meh. I liked his head design... on a minibot. On an Ultra, it just doesn't really work. And do I really care that his engine funbags light up? If anything, that would hurt the figure in my book.

Sunstreaker really looks like a mini-Alternator, I'll be on Sideswipe in an instant. Prowl looks good, though I wish he wasn't mistransformed. Octane is still an incredible must buy for me.

OMFG Get off the idea of everything having to be strictly as it is!!!!!

What is wrong with you, you dont like powerglide because he's not a tiny bot? He's a freaking plane! How do you expect a full plane to be a minibot just because thats what hasbro sold him as when it was '85?

Puh-lease, some sense people, god. Only the size changers such as Megatron will be disproportionate, everyone else in this line has been quite proper so far, except grimlock, still hate that he's not ultra or leader >.<

His size isn't correct with Starscream, thundercracker, skywarp, dirge, thrust, ramjet, dreadwind, astrotrain, optim

s prime,ultra magnus,megatron,Devastator,grimlock and i might have missed some.

It is currently only correct with bumblebee, cliffjumper and bugbite.

So for realistic proportions he would be either deluxe or voyager.

well.. make him blue and grey and you get Tailwind :tflaugh

EDIT: right now he looks like Hot House, the tailwind repaint :P

i dont get it.. what's with the snapdragon thing? :wtf

This is Snapdragon.

And this is what Universe PG is gonna look like (except hopefully the wings won't flop like that and will actually stay up).

A little paint, and presto!

Megatron 2008-02-02 @ 8:23 pm
I'd like to see Powerglide repainted as Snapdragon.

'Specially if someone figures out a way to rearrange that plane-mode into a dragon-thing.

Wasn't Classics Fireflight (the redeco of Legends Jetfire) originally supposed to be Powerglide? Just get him if you want him tiny.

He's bigger than the Seekers, and the thing that really bothers me is that he's bigger than Jetfire. The guy who was used as a transport in the original series. And in the original series, Powerglide was only about twice the size of a human.

And if you think scale has been proper in the line so far, you're completely wrong. Like, astronomically wrong.

Whatever. I still think Steel Wind makes a good Classics Powerglide.

Powerglides paint choice looks like Jetfire..mmm

Jetglide? Powerfire?

Altleast Jetfire and Powerglide will look like they belong in the same squad.

well going by R-Blades Bio from robot masters jetfire was part of a air team that all had similar colours so it could very well happen
