The Transformerland website has posted high-quality scans of the 1982 Diaclone catalog along with translations of the text throughout. The article includes some interesting G1 trivia, including the identity of the first-ever car-to-robot transforming toy, a look at the illustration that would ultimately lead to the creation of Optimus Prime, and even the scale - yes, scale! - of the early Autobot Cars. Keep reading for the relevant pages and more details! In the catalog are the first images of what would become the Autobot Cars, featuring photos of the Onebox Cherry Vanette that would come to be known as Ironhide and illustrations of the Lamborghini Countach toy that would ultimately become Sunstreaker. Sunstreaker is generally acknowledged as the first toy to transform completely from car to full humanoid robot. Also visible in the illustration on the Car Robot page is a car carrier that matches the earliest known prototypes of Optimus Prime!
From the article:
The cover of the catalog also confirms the scale of the Diaclone-derived Transformers: 1/60th Scale. For reference, this means those Transformers scale to Perfect Grade Gundam Model Kits- and most of the Transformers would be knee-high at best to any of those.
Of all the other weird sci-fi robots featured in the catalog, exactly three would become Transformers in any capacity: the "Dasher Series" which would become Robot Points premiums under the joint name of Powerdasher.
Be sure to check out Transformerland for the full translation and huge full-size scans!
