Transformers: Age of Extinction - Set Visit Shows Michael Bay In-Action, New Optimus Prime, More

By BaCon on Thursday, October 03, 2013

Nelson over at Shoot For the Edit has posted a short report with images about his recent Transformers: Age of Extinction set visit to the Chicago filming location. He shares some of the smaller details about what's going on set as well as a few images of the director Micheal Bay behind the desk, as well as how they got the new Optimus Prime trucks, New Cars and more that you can read below now.
As some of you know, I visited the TF4 set in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. I won't bore you with the details, but here are some things I noticed and discovered.

Michael has a totally new crew for this movie (aside from the DP & the AD). Stunt people & drivers, SFX crew, camera crew, and grips. I guess it goes with the whole "fresh" feel and look of TF4.

The truck company for Optimus Prime in TF 1-2-3 never wanted anything to do with the movie franchise. Before filming the first TF movie, the production crew approach the truck company to see if they could lend them 2 trucks. They said no. The producers then found 2 old rusty 1995 models that barely worked and gave them a paint job that got the job done with a very tight budget for chrome and stuff. This time around, Western Star (a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America) gave them 2 new trucks. No questions asked.

Optimus Prime was painted by West Coast Customs.

There are 2 of every car, truck, and vehicle in this production (one for back up).

1 Bugatti is owned by a private owner. The other is a loaner from Bugatti.

1 Lamborghini Aventador was purchased by the studio. The other was purchased by Bay (the one with the interior shots in the movie).

1 vintage 1967 Camaro SS (BumbleBee) is owned by the studio, the other by Bay.

Optimus and BumbleBee GGI renders are still being tweaked. Optimus looks grand and BB looks sleek, refined and badass.

Bay showed me a 5 min sizzle reel. It was f-ing amazing. After I saw it, he asked me "Kinda boring eh?" I think with all the pressure he's got, deprecating himself is his idea of humor. It also probably makes him strive more towards creating a kick-ass movie.

In the picture above you can see BumbleBee's head (paper weight) made of car parts (gears and stuff).

All the catering trucks have California license plates, I wonder why? I wonder if the local catering companies got tossed because of the leaked call sheet? Some how the food is better this time around (IMO).

Concept Artist Steve Jung, who has also worked on The Avengers, has posted a selection of his concept art to Facebook. Highlights include the interior of Lockdown's ship and its very regal cockpit, the Hong Kong street battle featuring the Dinobots, and most interestingly Widow Maker, a female Decepticon who was to transform into a Pagani Zonda. She was Jung's only full character design for Age of Extinction and, sadly, she didn't make the cut. Click through to see all the mirrored images!
Robot Kingdom has shared an image of the upcoming AD-31 "Saikyou" (Strongest/Ultimate) Optimus Prime, which appears to be a power-up form of Prime that uses the Generations Leader class mold. Seeing as that mold was already used as AD-01 in a similar but superior deco to the US release, could this be a Silver Knight color scheme like the one Target seems to be so in love with? More info as it becomes available, but for now check out the incredibly vague magazine scan!
TakaraTomy is releasing a special DVD to support Lost Age in Japan. Along with some other promotional materials, the Autobot Daishukou DVD will contain the fun Diorama Story & Toy Demonstration from a couple weeks back. It also appears to contain episode 1 of Fight! Super-Robot Lifeform Transformers. Keep reading for the ad!
Appearing very, very briefly on ToysRUs' website this morning were a pair of Angry Birds Transformers products. The Optimus Prime Bird Raceway is a slot-racing set that comes with transforming "Ultimate Optimus Prime Bird" and "Ultimate Megatron Pig" figures, and the Energon Racers Pack is an assortment of Autobirds and Deceptihogs. Keep reading for images and some (hopefully temporarily) dead links!
Shartimus Prime brings us his latest Transformers 4 Age of Extinction Lockdown One Step Changer action figure video review and image gallery. Yea, its a One Step, but its LOCKDOWN!!! Give this video a gander for the full details on this snappy little guy along with a nice collection of high quality images for staring at.
