BotCon 2008 - Transformers Animated Panel Report

By Primus on Sunday, April 27, 2008 @ 09:23:31 AM

Panel Includes: Aaron Archer (lead toy designer), Matt Youngbird (supervising producer), and Marty Isenberg (head writer).

SEASON 2

+ While they are working on Season 2 now, nothing has been confirmed.

+ Expect to see more action and adventure this time around with more of Cybertron and the Constructicons.

+ Starscream's treachery grows.

+ There will be a scene with Lockdown vs Prowl.

+ An answer will be given on Megatron's master plan. What exactly does Megatron want with Cybertron's space bridge technician?

NEW TOYS

+ A Blurr toy is coming. He has holographic wheels.

+ Swindle toy is coming - looks really nice if you like the G1 version.

+ Jon Machida is voicing Blurr.

+ Prowl with sidecar Armor toy, with new weapon, colors and fix hands. When asked, they revealed that Prowl with still be a deluxe and the sidecar will not transform.

+ Constructicons coming: Mixmaster, Scrapper. Tom Kenny and Jeff Bennet, respectively, will voice them.

There will be a Skywarp toy that is a redeco of Starscream. They say that this is by any means that a clone army of seekers is being made.

+ We'll be seeing a Shockwave toy as well.

+ Wreck Gar will be a garbage truck and will be offered as a Voyager class figure.

+ A vehicle design is still being worked on for Arcee.

+ Jetfire and Jetstorm will represent fire and ice, respectively. They are voyager class future-type-looking jets. When asked, they said it is not confirmed what allegiance Jetfire and Jetstorm will be.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

+ June is the "Rollout" DVD release and in Aug the rest of Season 1 will be out on DVD. You have to buy both DVDs to have the complete season. No word on what features the August DVD will have yet, though.

+ Lockdown has no allegiance and it was done to hide his origins to keep you wondering if he was originally an Autobot or Decepticon.

+ There are no plans for more Combaticons at this time.

+ There is a female character coming up that doesn't have a tragic past.

+ Swindle, along with Blurr, will be in the present, and not in a flashback scene. Blurr will be part of the Elite Guard.

+ If there is a Season 3, Oil Slick might show up.

+ Sari had a backpack that transformed into a tricycle that was originally going to be shown in the opening credits but was cut. It has not been planned for the show for now but it may be seen later. The designers call it "t-bob."

+ Because they have a limited voice cast budget, its unlikely both Swoop and Snarl will speak in the show. They are kinda like Larry, Daryl and Daryl (Newhart reference).

+ When asked about Thundercracker, Hasbro said they will redecorate the seekers with all the colors at some point, although they keep saying that there will be no clone army in the show, so it's posible the redeco jets will be toy line-only.

+ They want to do Octopunch, but are not sure if he would be a Pretender. He was originally going to be in the first episode after the 3-parter, but it didn't work out.

+ No plans right now of a Robot Heroes line based on Animated characters, though it was mentioned this would be a great line to feature the human characters.

+ When asked if there could ever be a Animated feature film. They said it comes down to rating, sales, etc. However, they would love to do something like that maybe as a straight to DVD.

+ When they originally thought about Blitzwing, he was meant to be a Joker meets the Mask and can transform into anything. However, toy-wise that feature wasn't feasible so they ended up with the multiple faces (Man-E-Faces) type feature.

+ It was Cartoon Network who pushed to have a female lead character (Sari) in the show. While Hasbro was a bit hesitant about it because its a toy line geared for boys, they feel it turned out great.

+ The show takes place in the 22nd century, but they deliberately didn't set a specific date.

+ Captain Fanzone comes from Carmen Fanzone who is a baseball player that Marty Isenberg (lead show writer) liked. It turns out that only three people with that last name live in Detroit so Marty had to go to his neighbor to ask him for permission, which he gave.

+ On that note, there might be some type of baseball reference coming up in the show.

+ The Animated comic will be from IDW Publishing (read our IDW panel report ed.) that is a 5-issue limited series of totally new stories written by Marty Isenberg. They noted that when Marty found out IDW was doing a comic he really wanted to write it.

+ The first issue will retell the three-part movie but from different points of view.

+ Each issue will be its own story taking place during the season 1 continuity.

+ Starscream is DEAD.

+ To end the panel, they showed episode 26, "Black Friday." ---------

I wouldn't argue with Animated robots in the RH line, but I think those efforts would be wasted...they're chibi enough. In fact, an RH Sari would probably wind up looking pretty show-accurate (if Hasbro was still planning to chibi-up the human characters)

Kind of confusing, but is sounds good so far. I wanna see this Prowl with Sidecar action.. just so I know which version I want.. I hate it when they make different versions of the same character with slight tweaks like that. Although, that traffic light thing the first one comes with looks kinda la... read more

Okay, so wait, we're still looking at season 1 then? Fine by me. Holo wheels for Blurr? That probably means he's a floating car then like his G1 counterpart and uses holo wheels to appear more Earth-like. On the toy they'll probably be transparant and removable then. Jetfire and Jetstorm... read more
