Botcon 2015 - Further Clarification On Scope of IP-Infringing Product Ban

This year's Botcon brochure specified that merchandise in the dealer room that infringes upon Hasbro's intellectual property would not be permitted in the dealer room. While a specific intent was made to avoid using the term "third party" in this, it was still left very ambiguous about where the line would fall in terms of banned goods. Some were obvious, like complete figures based on real characters, but things like accessories and other upgrades remained a question mark. We now have more information on this. Keep reading!

Thanks to Renderform's Venksta, we now know a little more about the items expected to be banned from the dealer room this year. While Venksta's inquiry to Fun Publications was in reference to the work of garage kit style makers like himself, it can be inferred that the rulings will be similar regardless of how the products are produced.

So with the recent Botcon "3rd party" ban, I went and contacted Funpub to see how it affects an independent designer like me, with selling my Renderform products at the show next month. I let them know how I exactly make my stuff, which is all out of my home, compared to all the factory produced stuff 3rd party is usually referred to. After a bit of waiting, they said any type of head products based on existing head designs of Hasbro IP is not allowed, but I got the OK to sell weapons and "armor". So there goes 90% of my Botcon plan, lol.

So while it seems that anything that carries the image of a Hasbro-owned character is banned, whether or not it is made to enhance official products, other types of upgrade items may get by just fine. It's a very fine line, and we expect there may be some bumps in terms of interpretation of this at show, but for now this is the form the IP infringement policy seems to be taking this year.
