Could Revenge of the Fallen Be the Most Successful Critical Failure Ever?
By bwbm on Monday, June 29, 2009
Many of you check the sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic and have learned of the low ratings critics have been scoring Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (20% and 36, respectively).
However, despite the critics, the film still wound up breaking box office records this weekend, with people dumping $201.2 million directly into Michael Bay & Co's pockets. This has led people to ask, "could this be the most successful critical failure ever?"
The Associated Press brings up this question today. It is pretty well known that "critics and mainstream crowds often disagree, but Revenge of the Fallen sets a new standard for the gulf between what reviewers and mass audiences like," the AP article reads.
Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures offers an explanation:
[Critics] forget what the goal of the movie was. The goal of the movie is to entertain and have fun. What the audience tells us is, `We couldn't be more entertained and having more fun.' They kind of roll their eyes at the critics and say, `You have no idea what you're talking about.'
In fact, Paramount exit polls peg 91% of the audiences felt that the sequel was as good as or better than the predecessor Transformers.

What Breaker is getting at is there is a sentimental tie in to BW/BM figures. It's hard to have such a tie with the movie figures, due to that a majority got so little screen time. Sometimes, people buy figures based on their connection to the character in the movie/show, overlooking design fl... read more

The big difference there is that BW/BM's storytelling attached us to those characters. I never thought Rhinox was a good figure, I just wanted him cause I loved him in the show. The Bayverse however is completely content with offering no character building, and even killing off mechs rather qui... read more

But aren't most movie alt modes super nice? And how are the robot modes so different from what we've seen before? For the most part, RID Prowl/Sideburn/X-Brawn could well be movie figures yet they were well accepted in the fandom. Bugsy faces and weird appendages, we've seen that alread... read more

K, arguments aside, Transformers recieved a huge charge of energy from these movies that will hopefully bring us more great molds in different TF lines that others will collect. Some of the molds from the movies are really sweet, but that's just my opinion. Revenge of the Fallen Could Definetl... read more

Yeah, I really do fuggin enjoy the movies and the toy designs (picked up Human Alliance BB at Kmart this afternoon, Hampton, VA). Like I said, "WE" isn't all inclusive, and they don't all read/post on forums. The MAJORITY, that's the group with the higher numbers, will go to... read more

Man you really come off as a JERK. But then if you "fuggin love them" 2007 & 2009 movies that doesn't surprise me at all. I said it wasn't about how complex they are. I have no idea how complex they are since I've never thrown money away on one. It's the way they look... read more

Get as peeved as you like, the majority of the all encompassing WE have purchased 2007 movie toys and will likely purchase 2009 movie toys dispite the flaming on the forums. My son and I purchased a few ROTF toys the first day they were "officially" available. We love em. The movies? ... read more

It's pretty simple. I hate the designs. Nothing about the complexity, the designs do absolutely nothing for me as a transfan. I also can't stand the heads. To me these bots are not transformers, just crap knock-offs with a TF name thrown on. Plus the fact that the first movie was unwatchabl... read more
