Labeouf Talks Movie Filming; 2nd, 3rd Installments

By bwbm on Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Shia Labeouf has finished his filming of Transformers with Michael Bay, and he seems to have a lot to say about it. About has interviewed Mr. Labeouf and and it was a lot like what we've seen recently from his interview with Rotten Tomatoes. "To go from [Director of 'Bobby'] Emilio Estevez to Michael Bay is like walking out of, you know, like in a hammock in the sky, hanging out drinking Pina Coladas with Jesus and then getting smacked in the face and thrown in the devil’s s**pile and having to make a movie. I swear to God," claims Mr. Labeouf. He even went to the point of saying that he was "thinking about quitting this industry." When asked why he did not, he said it was too important to his career. Mr. Labeouf has also claimed that he has already signed onto Transformers 2 and 3 and 3 and said that it'd be like his Lord of the Rings trilogy (a reference to his "Bobby" co-star, Elijah Wood).

Talking about Michael Bay, Mr. Labeouf had some tough words for him: "He’s so hard on his actors, and not in the way that Emilio might be, in that he’ll push you to be something better. Mike is just f**king a hard a**." However, he also acknowledged and Mr. Bay knew he was hard on his actors: "Mike at the end, he was like, ‘Look, I know I’m hard on you but you’ll never get this again. If you can go through this with me, you can do anything." Thanks to Don Murphy himself for the link.

Good luck to him I guess. I personally think he'd have more chance of success with an Even Stevens movie before this movie they're calling the Transformers will be a hit. But then they are making another Superman movie too. Anything can end up making enough world wide if it's out long enough it seems.

Take it with a big grain of salt. I've worked with plenty of actors and directors on the stage. Every director has his or her method; just as every actor has his or her method. The director's job isn't to coddle and babysit the actor. The actor's job isn't to second guess the director.
The rest of us should be so lucky to get paid what Labeouf is getting paid to put up with a demanding boss.

That he sighned contracts for sequels doesn't guarentee sequels, it just means they've locked him (and probably his salary) in if they do sequels.

im new to these boards and have been a big Transformer fan for years. I have also kept up with this site for a few years. Today I registered just to respond to this thread..I don't know anyone, and I know alot of people, who think this movie is going to be a success in any possible way after hearing about the story or seeing the movie designs..This reminds me exactly of the time Hollywood tried to redo Godzilla and failed miserabley. I totally understand making characters look slighty different or modifying a story slightly for a movie, and in cases like the X-men or Batman producers didn't go to far and the heroes still looked pretty much the same while maintaining the same personalities. What hollywood needs to understand is that there is a delicate point in which it can go too far. Some characters or stories are so iconic that no matter how tacky they cannot be changed much. Its all part of there charm if you will. Like Godzilla and his almost cute look, Superman and the red and blue.. In this case its the way these characters look. Fan or no fan people gre up with these characters even if in merely a passing way and want to see the red boxy Optimus Prime, The Megatron of old who has a cannon on his shoulder, Starscream and his arrogant face, Bumblebee and his love of humans and over zealoous personality, The red minivan Ironhide. Soundwave is another that comes to mind This movie is a pure perfect example of geting what could be a beautiful idea and ruining it as much as possible. If I were this actor I would almost be embarrased to be in this movie because when it bombs he will be attached to it forever. After follwing this movie i cannot for the life of me grasp why they didnt make it with pixar style animation, and go all out... Now that would taking he cartoon of the Transformers to the pure next level, not to mention how popular those movies are at present..

The problem with comparing the changes to transformers to the changes in films like Godzilla, X-men, Superman, Batman, etc. is that in each of those other examples there is basically one set character or characters who's look and back-story have been changed. The Transformers have been completely re-envisioned and redesigned so many times that the multiverse aspect has become an established part of the Transformers mythos. The "Universe" toy/comic line was built on the idea that there are an infinite number of realities with all-different looking and acting characters. The movie is just another one of these alternate realities that we are being introduced to for the first time.

I don't know how many other people like me are sick and tired of hearing people complain about how bad this movie is going to be. This is like people looking at one crappy screenshot of a video game and saying the game is going to suck. People give something a shot before you start go bashing it and if you think it is going to so bad then don't go see it when it comes out. I personally am excited to see this movie when it comes out given that I grew up with Transformers. BTW, Chainclaw that was a really great defense in favor of the movie.

the fact that so many people are complaining all over every message board clearly shows that although there have been many incarnations of the Transformers.. Gen 1 is by far the most long running and successful, as the comics and resurging toyline can attest too. Common sense would dictate that if your investing millions of dollars to produce a movie that maybe that would be the one you would want to go with.. There have also been several incarnations of superman, batman, x-men, godzilla, spawn, Gi Goe, ect.. but the original lines always remain the most popular by far in every example.

You say that this movie is being bashed all across the message boards. What are we, like 5% of the population? Hollywood is going to do what's best for Hollywood. But defending Hollywood aside, I'd like to add a few comments as well.

At first, I thought it was just the G1 purists who didn't like where this movie was going. But now I think it's the"Transformer" purists that don't like it. What I mean by that is, we're all so used to seeing (generally) the same type of characters being produced, that something so radical like this movie comes along, and it's automatically put down because it's different. I love all the different story lines and all the different characters. I could care less what the movie characters looked like as long as they transform (in fact, I love the new designs because they are so different...and when they transform on the big screen it'll be mindblowing). All you Transformer purists seem to care about is what you can recognize. You can't open your mind and adjust for change. When Beast Wars came out, everyone supposedly hated it. But the last time I checked, it's absolutely loved by most fans. So before you go hating on the movie, why don't you wait until it comes out first. I guarantee that half of the people that are arguing against it now will actually accept it in the future.

Let me begin by saying I am NOT a G1 purist. I believe Megatron should evolve to be a tank, not a gun. I think diecast metal is inferior to plastic and should be put behind us. I think that, while G1 was good for it's time, beast wars was the much needed revival and there hasn't been a good transformers television series since. That being said, I am an obsessive transformers fan/collector who believes in one thing: cool transformers with the occasional respectful homage. What Michael Bay has brought to the table of mainstream moviegoers is definitely NOT cool transformers. Let me rephrase that: What Michael Bay has brought to the table of mainstream moviegoers, whose naive perspectives on the franchise are easily-influenced to begin with, is not even transformers at all. Would you go see see a live action GI Joe movie in which all your favorite Joes and Cobra looked like care bears? I doubt it. So why would you go see a Transformers movie in which Prime, Megatron, and Starscream look like a hybrid of hellish aliens and lego bionicals. This is simply one more example of Hollywood making a craptastic movie and slapping the name of a popular franchise on it just to earn some big bucks. The movie is Transformers in NAME ONLY. Do not mistake this movie for an actual movie about the transformers. If you honestly have any hope for this movie, if you expect it to do any justice whatsoever to G1 or transformers in general, then you have absolutely no right to call yourself a transformers fan and you should be ashamed.

baseless comparisons such as "TF movie = catwoman",
