You're one of the fundamental apologists for the "radical" "new" "original" "different" "innovative" TF designs for the movie...
...and yet here you are, panning this undeniably novel concept in Transformers! :)
I love it personally... both on a conceptual level, and in terms of the execution. However, I do hope it's mistransformed and that engine bonnet swivels and lays flat across the shoulders the other way around. It looks like it does, and if not, it would be easy to customize.
Bravo! I've been waiting to see this idea explored in Transformers for, well... at least a decade now. :) |

Re: Jaguar Alternator Beast Mode (Score: 1) by KOG on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 @ 07:01:47 PM | Apples and oranges.
In the case of the movie, it's a question of 'style'. But at the end of the day, it's still vehicles turning into bots.
But when I look at Alts, I have a totally different set of criteria.
My collection consists entirely of Autobot Alt/Bts. 100%. I've skipped all decepticon recolors/remoulds. I'm well aware that even back in G1, not all autobots were cars/trucks. And some decepticons WERE cars/trucks. But when it comes to Alt/BTs... I've always thought that the licensed vehicle thing fits the autobots perfectly. But if you start to have a lineup of cars vs.... a lineup of differently colored cars, it's just not so cool anymore. Hence my decision to collect autobots only. With me so far? Cool.
Based on the above, I already have a reason to skip this Jaguar/Ravage.
Now, reason #2. I have 2 lineups on my shelves. One of Alt bots, and one of BT cars. This new Jaguar... it'd look right at home in my car lineup. But it would look greatly out of place with my bot lineup.
Smokescreen - bot
Sideswipe - bot
Silver(Blue?)Streak - bot
Hound - bot
Tracks - bot
Jazz - bot
Grimlock - bot
Windcharger - bot
Wheeljack - bot
Prowl - bot
Skids - bot
Sunstreaker - bot
Optimus - bot
Mirage - bot
Ravage - kitty.... whoa whoa WHOA WHAT?!
14 bots and one robot cat.... meh. Doesn't work for me. Others may like it, and that's cool... but I want my lineup of bots to remain as just that. A lineup of bots.
So you see, my reasons for not being interested in this new Alt have nothing to do with HOW it was done. The execution could be perfect, but I still wouldn't want it. Because on a very basic level, I don't want a Decepticon Alt/BT. And I don't want a car that turns into a cat. I'm just not interested. Hell, even when I was a kid, most of my toys were of the autobot variety... |
Re: Jaguar Alternator Beast Mode (Score: 1) by SMOG on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 @ 07:55:03 PM | Good to know that my own fastidious aesthetic sense and fickle, convoluted sense of internal logic are not unique to me, KOG. :)
We have something in common... I also prefer to get the Alternator Autobots. Why? I mean, they're all robots, right? Why should it matter? Some latent attachment to G1 politics?
And yet, despite preferring the Swindle mold, I still traded my Swindle to a friend for the Hound, just because Hound was a G1 Autobot, and that's the arbitrary parameter for my Alternators collection. After all, as a collector, as soon as you start relaxing your parameters, you stand to spend a whole lot more money! :)
I'm even desperately eager to swap my Grimlock for a Wheeljack because, well... Grimlock just doesn't fit as a car. The only Con I have currently is Shockwaveblast... and he was so cheap as part of an Ebay lot, I didn't sweat it... but I do love that figure just because the mold channels the classic Shockwave so damn well!
Which brings us to Ravage. I never liked mass-shifting. I never liked that Ravage was a cassette tape, and yet, I loved Ravage as a character. I liked that he wasn't a cybertronian who transforms into a jaguar... he was a cybertronian who WAS a jaguar. The obvious answer was that a Ravage had to be released that was an animal type who transformed into a vehicle... yet it never came to be until now.
Obviously it's all personal taste, but it's interesting to see that someone who argues fervently for fresh designs and new ways of looking at the old characters when defending the movie designs, can still get hung up on his old G1 baggage.
At least in this case, I'm not implying that your disdain for this design is wholly contingent on a lack of sophistication/maturity, or stubbornly retrograde tastes.
;)

I think this is pretty cool and interesting. Clever use of the car name. Not digging the front end of the car just chillin' on his back like that. That sort of thing works with an upright robot , but not here.
Funny that we've seen this, but no Rumble proto yet. Am I the only one who smells Lazerbeak? I think the smaller bots like this should be motorcycles, golf-carts and , uh...soap box racers. How cool and stupid would THAT be?

I skipped Dead End, I skipped the first Ravage, I skipped Swindle, I skipped Shockblast (or whatever they called him in the end), I skipped Decepticharge, and I CERTAINLY skipped Nemesis Prime...
So I guess your 'theory' doesn't hold a lot of water.
I'm simply not interested in decepticons that are just repaints of autobots that I already have.
Now, if they took MP Starscream and repainted him and gave him a new head and autobot symbols, and called him 'jetfire'... would I want that? Hell no. |

Now.... I MIGHT give in and get Rumble. If he ever comes out. Since he's a new mould, and transforms into a bot, and won't look totally out of place with the rest of my collection. And if I get him... maybe I'll feel the urge to go ahead and get the other decepticons I skipped, so that he has some company...
But even then, I'm not real sure I'd want 'cat ravage'.
For now though, my wallet is happy that I'm not bothering with this guy. Hell, I haven't even decided if I can spare the money for MP Starscream or MP Prime. |

I think it's a great concept, and a reasonably good execution. I'm not usually into beastformers, but in this case, and because it's Ravage (oldschool! even the head mold looks pretty close to the original), I'm actually kind of excited about it.
It's curious how age and nostalgia define our tastes as compared to our "inner child". There are toys now that I feel drawn to because they resonate with some memory of my childhood... even if they might not be things I would have been as excited about when I actually -was- a child.
There's a similar phenomenon at work in the Japanese toy market now, wherein a huge portion of the market seems to be designed for adult collectors... like the Chogokin series of die-cast figures based on 1970's and 80's robots.
