Reselling Vintage Transformers Could be Against the Law After 2009-02-10
By News_Staff on Wednesday, January 07, 2009
Thanks to the Hobbes-timus Prime for the heads-up, it seems there's STILL some serious panic swirling around lead in toys. So much so that the starting February 10th, 2009, the U.S. Consumer Products and Safety Commission has made it illegal to re-sell any children's related products from clothing to toys that have not been tested to be lead free.
Toys, clothing and other items used by children under 12 will be subjected to lead testing and will have to have labels on them to prove that they have passed inspection.
What does this mean to the toy collectibles industry? Already many children's consignment and re-sale shops have stopped adding new inventory.
For those of us here. The question is if this is specific to retailers or individuals too? We are likely to see the first impact on places like Ebay. Which they will likely fight because it will mean the loss of a lot of revenues they make from sales of vintage toys.
How do you feel about this? Do you think it is for real? How will it impact your Transformers collecting if they clamp down?

Wins thread. That aside: I'm pretty sure this will affect retail outlets only. Otherwise it's simply impossible to enforce. Sucks for mom and pop but to be honest, the only local second hand toy store there was around here closed down and went internet last year. I'd be willing to bet... read more

I have a question for parents. If your kid is CHEWING on a hot wheels car to begin with, how can you even tell if the lead has affected them?

That article is badly worded. It is actually more of a retail thing and affects future lead standards, not resale.

Alright, just to settle this before all the lawsuit monkeys come after me; Pencil "lead" =/= REAL lead. You can lick my autographs to your heart's content. In fact, I may even add "all-natural autograph" to the listing.

I seriously doubt that the USA authorities will honestly be able to stop the resale of kids products. From garage sales, school bazaars to thrift-stores and charity stores, there simply won't be enough government agents to enforce or investigate it. Take illegally copied DVDs and "knocko... read more

Would that be a led based pencil??? I wonder what would happen if I licked your autographs. I wonder how many I would have to order and lick to feel some kind of affect.

Wow! Hopefully this mess will end up not being as bad as people are worrying it will be. Sheesh, what's next? I've been selling a lot of my old toys on the Bay for years, and still got a ways to go. It's gonna be a pain in the rear IF some weird annoying law like this goes into effec... read more
