Got the Beast Machines box set in this weekend (I know it is late, should have gotten it months ago) and I have watched nearly all the episodes and only got 5 more to go. And it has been a long time I enjoyed a Transformers show that much. I will have to admit, at first I did not like it when I saw it years back (from a cd-rom which did not do it justice) because of the really weird robot modes the Maximals got. They still take getting used to. That aside nearly everything is perfect about it. Read More

This is the only US Transformers box set that I haven't picked up yet. It just doesn't excite me, since it was the worst TF series (aside from the more recent imported crap on TV right now) ever created.

Beast Machines was a well written show, with some excellent character development. It was very different from the previous Transformers series and I think hardcore G1 fans couldn't accept it.

I can tell you what bugged me about BW. G1 was somewhat believeable because you had machines turning into robots. Later on, it kinda went south with beastbots being introduced. It's more believeable to have a plane or a car transform into a giant robot than to have, say, a rat or a spider.
That being said, G1 and BW are 2 completely different genres compelling to 2 different types of fans. Only the most hardcore TF fan would be fanatical for both BW/BM and non-BW/BM. From reading the various posts on various fansites concerning BW vs G1, it's the impression I get.
Of course, this is all IMO

Trust me; I'm far from the first not to like it. Actually, I've never heard anyone defend it until now, lol (that counts not only for the show, but also the poorly produced toys). Yes, I'll admit that it was well written and had great story telling, but it wasn't Transformers to me. Beast Wars was great and still had the Transformers feeling to it, but this (BM) was a very poor follow up to the 2nd best Transformers series of all time (BW). For one, they gave some of them hair in robot mode (think Nightscream) and had this whole "tree hugger" thing going on. Heck, vehicle modes were even portrayed as evil, which is what started Transformers. I won't ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the final episode (the event that happens at the end) is what practically killed the original Transformers lore. That is, if you choose to go by it (which I know just about no one does).

Nah mate, Beast Machines is hands-down (for ME) the best Tf series of all of them. I never watched it when it was new, caught up with it around the car-robots/RiD time period, but for me, it got me back into TF after a long absence, made me think about all those unresolved issues from G1, made me think about potential things that may have happened in the G1 days and lots more. The return to the natural order of things is hippie-free-loving-tree-huggin' stuff, but whats wrong with that? Is transformers so bereft of new ideas that is has to recycle old ones? Beast Machines was a further maturing of the TF story that began with Beast Wars, the fact that it is so divisive is due to the fact that most G1 fans seem to be stuck in their old habits! You guys that hate BEast MAchines are going to be in trouble when the movie comes out. FLAME ON !

gigazarak,
I'm not a G1 purest and I am greatly looking forward to the movie coming out, dispite changes being made and all. Only a moron would think that the movie would be 100% G1 accurate. I just didn't like Beast Machines. I'll admit that I watched BM with much excitment and anticipation each Saturday morning when it first aired. I liked the G1 references and I agree that it was a more mature story (i.e. Maximal sparks being tainted and turned into Vehicons), but it left me in the dust. It got away from the whole premise of Transformers and got too wrapped up in this spiritual stuff (i.e. "I am transformed") that just put me to sleep. What made Transformers "Transformers" was that they could transform from robot mode to alt mode with ease and at will. In BM, they had to find themselves in order to morph from one mode to another. In my mind this was more like Power Rangers meets the Ninja Turtles. The series itself did have true potential, but was a missed opportunity all together. Another thing, I kind of liked where the Botcon/OTFCC comics were going with this (if you followed them), but sadly, they were cancelled in the whole fiasco a few years ago.

I actually liked BM more than I first thought that I would and I am a G1 purist. Closed a lot of the storylines from BW for me.
In so far as the newer TF shows I stick with the fan subbed versions. I find that they are better, but most anime has gone down a cuttie pie path and deals with so much Power Rangers and Pokemon based kiddie storyline crap that it makes me sick sometimes when I watch them.
The biggest problem is that we are now watching them with adult eyes and minds instead of kid's eyes and minds. That does make a big difference. TRUST ME!

I guess that's what seperated G1, BW, and BM from the imported TF anime....they did offer something for everyone. The stories were something that youth and adults could enjoy. While not being too complicated, they each offered stories with both character and plot development that were interesting and allowed you to become involved in the world of the Transformers. The new anime versions of the show being brought over just don't seem to have the writing or "heart" to achieve this. Just seems that they just don't quite have the balance of action and story telling that the first three (excluding G2) series had.
All that being said, I've been pretty down on Beast Machines above. I guess after much thinking the reason why I have such ill will is that I didn't like how the series ended. It did keep me interested and had a few great plot twists in there. Other than that, I guess the series was alright, but I still rank them: G1, BW, and then BM. I'm sure I'll eventually pick up this box set as well.

If it weren't for Beast Machines being such an awful series, maybe we wouldn't have had to put up with 4 years of Japanese imported crap for Transformers.
Maybe if it had been written as well as Beast Wars was, we could've had another 3/4 years of great storys, great writing and fun characters.
Insted we got hippy Prime, Evil Rhinox, Soppy Black Arachnia and her constant complaining about where Silverbolt was, Rattrap being changed from a a cool Demolitions expert, to the kid look "Tech Expert" who took rhinox's job, Cheetor was more bareable than he was in Beast Wars, Silverbolt always seemed to be depressed and then we had Nightscream who was far more annoying than Cheetor ever was in Beast Wars, then we had the most ludicrous character of them all, Botanica... a frigging plan Transformer....
I seriously think Bob Skir was smoking crack and wacky baccy when he came up with the plot for this show...

Seems to me that all the complaints about Beast Machines have more to do with peoples personal expectations/tastes than with the actuall quallity of the show. When people complain about the writing, they are actually saying that it wasn't what they wanted to see. The story was more adult than it was with Beast Wars. The characters went from being like angst-ridden teens who's lives revolved around conflict to being more like young adults struggling to find themselves and deal with complex relationships.
My advise is that anyone who doesn't like Beast Machines should move out on thier own, get a job, and be involved in a serious relationship or two and then go back at watch it. A little growing up may change your perspective on the show.
