RUMOR: Disney In Talks To Buy Hasbro - Transformers More Than Meets the Mouse?

By Jack on Tuesday, November 06, 2012

Gosh, if there ever was a rumor I didn't want to be true. It is this one just in via MTV Geek that Disney and Hasbro are in talks about an acquisition. With the pocket-book open and Star Wars in the cart, it seem the Mouse is looking for more cheese in Hasbro's library of brands including Transformers, My Little Pony, GI Joe, Battleship, Nerf, Magic: The Gathering, Monopoly, and literally 100s of toys and games kids have grown up with for decades.

From what we’re told, these are still just discussions at this point, but serious enough that something could be announced at any time and create ripples throughout the entertainment industry. The Lucasfilm acquisition has been reported as taking as few as 6 months to complete. On the other hand, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has until 2015 on his current contract, and he waited about 3 years in between the acquisitions of Marvel and Lucasfilm, so we may be without firm news on this for some time

Obviously, the large cache of Popular Culture properties would add to Disney's library to make a true Tour De Force in the entertainment industry. Its also not hard to imagine Hasbro's is in a position to want to be acquired either. With retail sales revenues flagging and the the slow uptake for The Hub, this could save the day and keep the channel afloat, or at least one can hope. Traditionally, acquisitions get rolled up into the parent company and it may be fans will have to watch their favorite Robot's shows on the Disney Channel if this goes down.

On the toys side, it might be good for fans and collectors to have the brand under a bigger umbrella with a bigger reach. Disney has deep pockets that hopefully would allow for more stable product roll outs and hopefully more modest pricing. With Hasbro struggling to appease Wall Street, they have raised prices over 50% in the last 5 years alone. Only time will tell what's going to happen. PLEASE, Share your comments on the possible event and what it would mean to you.

On the TFormers Forums, Scaleface has assembled the week's worth of Play With This Too news- and it's been a busy week! Color guides have been posted for previously-known characters Bite Mark and D-Kay, as well as a new character, R-Buke, who is a Tech Drone jet in G1 Dreadwind colors! Also present are full renders of Desolataur, headshots of more new characters by artist Candice Santora, and an intriguing set of 5mm-compatible accessory staves by newcomer Albie Lim, whose picture you'll find in the gallery. Keep reading to see it all!
DX9 has updated their Weibo page with images of their Micro Worlds X05 figure, a Legends-scaled version of G1 Cyclonus! It's decent looking for the scale, with a slightly squashed jet more that wouldn't look out of place with your QTransformers. It even seems to come with a weapon patterned after Cyclonus' Targetmaster partner Nightstick! Keep reading to see more!
Maketoys has posted teaser images and a brief description for a new line of figures titled Re:Master. The name and text seem to imply a "new scale," and puts heavy emphasis on the concept of scale in general. Current speculation is that the figures - interpretations of Chromedome, Hound, and Inferno shown only in silhouette- will be in the post-MP-10 Masterpiece scale, but nothing is known as of yet. Keep reading to see!
The amusingly named Xipoo company is reportedly manufacturing block kits that are in the vague style of Kre-O Microcombiners, but fully brick-built instead of minifigure based. A series of five kits features dinosaurs that can change to robot models, and a full set can be rebuilt to make "Ultimate Warrior Dino King". We have a few sales listing images mirrored, and while we might not recommend trying to purchase these, they're an entertaining look at the more creative than usual side of the knockoff trade, much like the lego-style Angry Bird Transformers figures we reported back in December.
Badcube has debuted their newest upcoming products this afternoon, taking on a trio of figures based on the Insecticons. Badcube says they should scale well to their other products Brawny and the upcoming Wardog, but they don't offer any objective size reference so far. But, they say these figures should release around the same time as Wardog, so they may not be very far off. Click through to check out the photos!
