Scheduled Summer '09 TF2 Release? Don't Be Too Happy

By bwbm on Monday, September 24, 2007 @ 08:34:22 AM

An L.A. Times article spotlighting Steven Spielberg has subsequently revealed that the sequel to the summer blockbuster "Transformers" is scheduled for a summer 2009 release.

The article actually spotlights Mr. Spielberg and his supposed discontent with how Viacom, Inc. (Viacom is the parent company of Paramount Pictures) has handled their business with him since they purchased his co-founded studio DreamWorks SKG.

While this date is not surprising, it may not be healthy for many fans to start getting happy.

The reason? Well, it has been revealed before that the sequel - what I'll call "Transformers 2" - is coming due to "Transformers"' awesome success at the box office this summer. Peter Cullen signed a three movie deal and had been told to keep the next year open. Meanwhile, both Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox have both been signed for a sequel.

However, Producer Don Murphy (who, according to Director Michael Bay, was not much of a producer, but that's irrelevant on this topic) has written that Paramount is waiting out the strike that might be the plight of Hollywood come June of next year.

Mr. Bay himself has also been quoted as saying that the "people at the studio have been dragging for the last two months," even though he is "itching" to work on something. He has said that he may "jump ship" to another project and/or studio until this strike mess is resolved.

So while Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Bay are both signed onto a sequel, and it's scheduled for sumer 2009, it doesn't mean that it will happen in 2009.

Say they do wait out the strike and it does not actually take place, pre-production still needs to take place. Not to mention if Mr. Bay plans to outdo "Transformers," the CGI process for "Transformers 2" will take longer than the year it took for the original.

Also, if Mr. Spielberg does jump ship once his contract with Viacom runs up, what will happen to the executive producer position?

There are just too many equations that need to be factored in for the sequel to actually start running on full. While the magic may somehow run its course on "Transformers 2," it's just a better plan to deploy the strategy that Paramount Pictures is supposedly using for the strike: wait and see.

The strike stuff is going to affect the entire film industry, not just this film. It's a shame, but a lot of people are indeed in a holding pattern now. I only hope that by setting that date, they don't rush the production and lose quality as a result.

You know, at this point... w/e. Wake me up when they have an actual production schedule finalized. As for Spielberg's plight, I don't feel for him. He sold to Viacom. If he's upset that some of his creative executive powers have been taken away, well DUH! He doesn't own Dreamworks anymore. What he does is what he does.

As far as the comment that cg will take longer, it certainly could- but let me remind folks that unless they reimagen the same characters between this and the next film, they have already designed and built the "puppets" for some of the characters that will appear in the next movie. This process will have been quite time consuming.

In fact I remember reading somewhere they figured the amount of work that went in to designing optimus prime was so involved ILM felt they would need to make sequels in order to make a profit of their work.

Yes visual effects could take longer, but they could now remake this movie more quickly. It just depends on the script (which will hopefully focus more on the bots and include more cons this time).

A strike occurs when a union (which supposedly represents workers on such issues as pay and benefits) can not strike a deal with the employer. General Motors is a great example. GM (employer) wanted the Union (in this case, the United Auto Workers or UAW) to shoulder the burden of retirement benefits. However, since neither the union or the employer could compromise, the union called a strike. Basically, during a strike anyone belonging to the union doesn't work. The union (barely) compensates the workers during a strike.

A strike is meant to get the employer to agree to terms. All it really does is make an ass out of both parties. What I'd like to know is what the Guild is crying about now to threaten a strike.
