Even Optimus Prime couldn't save them! Sony's DVD group that created the fantastic reissues for "A Sesame Street Christmas Carol" and a 20th anniversary edition of "Transformers: The Movie" last fall is closing its doors. In a story carried by Yahoo News, "Sources say parent company Sony BMG Music Entertainment is shuttering the label to focus on its core music business." Looks like we wont be seeing re-issues of the G1 series as was reported. Check out the full news story.

What you are probably seeing here is just a common sense shake up. Sony had too many fingers, often fighting for space in the same pies.
Sony Music makes games and DVDs, which contradict the efforts of sony's film subsidiaries etc.
This is all part of their downsizing.
Trust me, it will be released, probably by either a third party or another sony related company.

Sony is always full of crap.
Like the PS3. Europe is paying the highest price for the damm thing but we are getting the worst deal as the PS2 chip is removed.
First they make us wait and pay a higher price and now they are screwing us again.

Somehow I am not surprised that Sony is pulling this stunt. I mean their PS3 sales are hurting, they started the cd copy protection crap. and now they want to screw over more fans. For thoser of us who couldn't get the Rhino DVD sets when they came out are left watching the prices climb even more now.

What do you mean the PS3 does not have the PS2 chip?
Anyway, I don't see how this affects Sony's license for Transformers at all. Sony will just release it under one of their other subsidiaries. Either way, I can care less as I own the Rhino releases and have no need to rebuy the series.

Sony is screwy with their marketing these last couple years. PSP is just about washed up and they are going to release a compact slimline version of it. Despite the fact that the DS is killing it in the US domestic and Japan overseas sales.
Makes me wonder how much longer they can milk PS2 before the well runs dry. PS3 will just be a platform for enhanced PS2 remakes and the upmteenth generation of sequels from those same stupid franchises (Devil May Cry 5, Tekken 7, Final Fantasy 14, Metal Gear Solid 5, Ridge Racer 8, God of War 3, etc, etc).

The US and the Japanese PS3 systems include a special chip that runs PS2 games.
The European PS3 will be sold without this chip so PS2 games will have to be run using special emulation software. Just like the Xbox 360 runs Xbox games.
Which means a lot of games may be unplayable for European gamers.

Who cares if the PS3 plays host to a lot of sequels? The games get sequels for a reason. They are popular and sell well.
The 360, PS3's main competition in the 'hardcore gamer' market is playing host to a ton of sequels as well. Halo 3, Forza 2, Fable 2, Project Gotham 3, Dead or Alive 4, as well as cross-platform stuff like Call of Duty 2/3, Armored Core 4, Virtua Fighter 5, etc...
So how is this any different from the PS3?
And if you look at the Wii... Nintendo LOVES to milk its classic franchises. More Mario, more Zelda, more Metroid, more Pokemon..... etc.
