I am taking this with a grain of salt because it's an UNCONFIRMED sketch, but this would be a fantastic addition to the Classics line. If they do bring back the Grimster, let's see what they can do about ressurecting the rest of his Dinobot homies.

A different take, but all the same quite impressive. Leaks happen in any facet in business. Some people enjoy the rush of trying to be covert and not get caught... and we the fans reap the reward. I would think if the person 'leaking' this were to be caught by HasTak, there'd be dues to pay.

I heard early on that Grimlock would be part of this line, so I've been eagerly awaiting any news on this figure.
Now, finally... I have to say I kind of hope that this isn't the final design.
I know, I know... but hear me out, I'm not griping just for griping's sake. This is a pretty good looking Grimlock, and if it's executed like the other Classics seem to be, it'll probably be a great figure.
However, it's missing something, isn't it?
I ran into this problem a while back when I tried to customize a Transmetal Megatron into a Grimlock and I realised that Grimlock has never been a sleek, low-slung realistic T-rex... he's always been a plodding, cartoonish, blocky, oddly cute T-Rex. Grimlock is a mighty warrior, but he's also kind of a loveable clod.
This sketch is missing some of that "classic" personality. Grimlock is possibly one of the most iconic Transformers, so I'm wondering why they didn't hew a little closer to that original design.
I think the designers of the Energon Grimlock understood what I'm talking about, but they pushed it too far in that design (which wasn't very nicely executed in the end, and too small anyway).
Maybe something a little more traditional in the actual transformation dynamics would have preserved that quality, that stompy, blocky Grimlock we remember?

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it would fit with the design direction of this toy line. The original Grimlock was based on the common misperception of a Tyrranosaur's posture. It wasn't intended to add character, that's just how most people assumed the creatures moved. Today it's more commonly accepted that they stood like this interpretation.
You bring up an important point, though - by having an alt mode capable of animal expression, Grimlock became more recognizable in that form. It became increasingly odd that he would find it necessary to transform at all.
Personally, I'm just pleased to see that it doesn't transform like a Beast Wars toy. I think you could probably pose him more like what you're looking for. Depends on the range of motion in the head, I guess.

I dont like to be overly negative on these posts. So much trash talk from the fans sometimes. But these sketches are pretty bad. I mean just the quality of them. Doesnt look like something that was done by a proffessional. Even if the picture was clear and not blurry I think it just looks like something I would have drawn and I suck at drawing. I really like the Classic Line so far and I hope they have a Grimlock but I am kinda hoping these sketches are fake or just real early tests.
Re: TF Classics Grimlock? (Score: 1) by SMOG on Friday, June 02, 2006 @ 03:07:04 AM
Exactly... he may be less realistic, but there's something very distinctive and cariacature-like about Grimmy's dino-mode... in the cartoon especially.
Much moreso than his robot mode even... which is where this design kind of misses the mark a bit. The robot mode looks like a pretty decent rendition of Grimlock, but the dino-mode is just too removed from that big dopey dinobot that we all have so much affection for.
However, I think it's a matter of stylization, rather than biological accuracy. It would have been possible to reconfigure the Grimlock into a realistic less-upright T-rex and still preserve that classic "stompy" feeling (I like that word). :)
A good example of this is the Gojulas Giga from Zoids, a more modern re-take on the original retro-looking Gojulas (aka Zoidzilla). Note the horizontal configuration, while retaining a blocky, stylized proportions.

Also, while I agree that it's nice he's not a BW-style beastformer, for some reason, it bothers me that the head splits in half and becomes his feet.

I have no doubt that this and the Megatron design are authentic. This sort of design artwork is nothing to take for granted, and is certainly the work of a professional. Shame on anyone who suggests otherwise.
Whether these designs make it to production or not is anyone's guess, but the fact that they've made it as far as a color proof suggests to me that there will at least be prototypes made.

Well, he's different, that's for sure. Can't say I'm too thrilled with his transformation. Not that I think he looks bad, but I've never been thrilled with beast-bots that stand on their head it robot mode. Grimlock has such a unique and iconic transformation that says "classic" to me, no other figure has ever nailed it the same way (aside from some of the other G1 Dinobots), even WW Grimlock retained some of those features. It's not a bad transformation, it's just not a transformation fitting of Grimlock.
