Toshiba Plans to Drop HD-DVD Format

By bwbm on Sunday, February 17, 2008

So "Transformers" director Michael Bay's comments about the death of HD-DVD may be true as Toshiba Corp., the spearheading company of the format, is planning on dropping the format.

Sister site Entertainment News International reports that an unidentified company source has said that Toshiba is entering the final stages of exiting the format war, which will declare Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray the winner of the next-generation format war.

Expect an announcement on the pull-out from Toshiba early this week, the source says.

The final blows to the already-lagging HD-DVD format comes when big box retailers Wal-Mart and Best Buy as well as online rental service Netflix backed Blu-ray this past week.

DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER BTW: PS3 games are harder ot make, true, but it's not a hugely massive difference. Read the forums at www.beyond3d.com Galzamus. They have people who work on PS3 games there. In general, it's a damn good source on most forms of 3D hardware.

You're right, it is about the movies. And that's exactly why the PS3 is in the conversation. Sony used the PS3 as a Trojan Horse in the format war to get Blu-Ray players into households that were looking to buy a console-type gaming device and not necessarily a stand-alone player. If anythin... read more

Ya know, I don't know why you guys are bringing in PS3s into the mix of all of this.. it's about the movies in this case. I work in the electronics section over at target.. and for the most part, PS3s sit there collecting dust.. *I would coin the phrase, we couldn't give them away.. but ... read more

About as collectible as a laser disc, which go for about 99 cents on eBay, FWIW.

So HD-DVDs are no longer goin to be made rite? well thats what I read anyways, that they will come to a halt. If that is the case, would the HD version of TF be a collectible?

Most of the PS3's sold were sold to gamers and those may not play/buy a lot of movies so I doubt this will affect sales too much.

Agreed, and the Blu-Ray player was half the reason I bought it (not a big gamer, but I like some games (God of War ftw)).

You misunderstand what I said. I meant that the lack of HD had nothing to do with the price being what it was. The X360 debuted with 3 and 400 dollar models a year before the Wii did. Not only that, but the Wii is basically a supercharged Gamecube with more RAM and a few myterious components. The ... read more

Even at start the PS3 came with all the bells and whistles making it the better buy from the start. If you compared the 360 to the PS3 (apples to apples - adding WiFi ($100), HD-DVD ($200 to 360) the PS3 was cheaper by at least $200.
