On the differences between Transformers and other MMORPG games:
“Transformers are about war; they’re about action. They don’t carry gold, bake bread, catch fish, cut down trees. But for all they take away, they throw open so many more opportunities,” says Horton about the reasoning behind the retooling. “Maybe there’s more in a selection of characters and abilities, and the strategy in that, than there is [in] levelling a character endlessly and going through fuck loads of boss battles.”
About building AND fighting Transformers robots:
“Mixing and matching these combinations provides variety,” says Horton, indicating their role in your tinkering with your bots as they level up and you buy new abilities. “We want them to be as tactile and responsive as possible. We have to keep a large element of skill in here; it’s imperative – good games have skill, but that balance between decision-making, reaction time and strategy of bot deployment.”
Insights about gow the players Interact in the game:
“No one character has the ability to take on multiple players, heal themselves and support others,” says Cooper. “If I’ve died in the game, what does it make sense to take out of the toy box next?” In other words, the five bots you choose to bring into the game are a tactical resource. When your bot goes down, you’ll have the choice of spending Energon, the game’s main currency, on resurrecting it or to switch to another, which will spawn nearby.
The Transformers Universe uses a new Jagex game engine:
The game is built in a brand new, proprietary 3D engine, with the intention that it’s “best in class” so as not to jar with the production values of boxed games, and also to help ensure the game still looks good in years to come.
On Working Hasbro and customizing features for the game:
“It’s interesting because you’re dealing with a franchise that’s been around for decades, and is obviously much-loved,” says De Rakoff. “So my concern going into this was that they would be very controlling and very protective of their IP and characters, but so far they’ve been very collaborative, very responsive.”
