Coming up on four years since the last show in 2016, we've begun to see some signs of activity coming from Botcon once again over the last couple of days! The botcon.com website was brought back, at first appearing as it had just after Botcon 2016, but then changing to a message declaring that it was now under "renovations". Similarly, the Twitter account and Facebook page have both updated to reflect something going on behind the scenes right now.
Unfortunately, that's about all the actual information we have to go on at the moment. Looking up ownership information for botcon.com shows that the domain name is currently in "pending transfer" status, meaning it's going to another registrar. This might show that ownership has changed hands and the new owner or owners want to consolidate it with other held domains in one place. Or the existing owner found a coupon and is moving it to save some money. The trademark of Botcon still shows as registered to Fun Publications, though if it were being licensed to another party, we wouldn't have a way to know that from a simple lookup.
There's a range of possibilities that exist right now. Whether this means we're going to get some kind of event under the Botcon name is unclear, but the few signs we have could point in that direction. That's still a far leap from being able to conclude that an official Transformers convention is going to be a thing again, or if it is, that it would be anything like what we had before.
Is 2020 to be the year that Botcon comes back? Maybe! But who the heck knows what that actually means right now.
I'm so hoping for BotCon in the west coast... BotCon Las Vegas would be awesome.
