Following the official reveal, Mattel Design Center @awildermode has posted a quick overview of the 3D printed design model and hi notes about creating the transforming figure. Some changes were made to original mold to work in the small form factor of 1:64 scale.
This is gives a good idea of how small this figure is, which is probably common for Hot Wheels fans. For Transformers fans, this is not a lot of toy for a lot of money at $80 USD. What is more worrisome, is this will probably be hard to get. Like Funko, How Wheels has a rabid collector base that makes getting popular things difficult and expensive. As it is already listing online for scalper prices. Read on to get the behind the scenes scoop on the making of this Mattel Collectors Hot Wheels Transformers Optimus Prime.
Yes, it transforms. Here is the test video of the first print out from a year ago. This was about 175 hours of work from initial concept, sculpting, preliminary engineering, development, etc.
In order for it to work at this scale, I had to make some slight modifications due to size and tolerance limitations. Two ‘sliding joints’ were used so the shoulder and ankles could clear during transformation. Also made a hip joint to spread the legs out, but limited due to space. Other than that, Optimus! transforms the same as the Generation 1 Optimus Prime from 1984

Note that the Toy Number is HXT02...as in Hot Wheels X Transformers. I totally just made that up, but I am going with it. And, the math nerds will notice I wrote “Optimus!” as in Optimus Prime.
I was interested until I saw the $80 price tag. There is no legitimate reason for it to be so expensive. Pure price gouging!
Wow another G1 optimus prime nobody wants and with an $80 price tag to boot.
That Optimus, is a literal dream come true... but that price tag is most certainly not.
Never thought I would ever say this, but the Bumblebee actually looks pretty good. As a Transformer and Hot wheel fan, this is actually pretty exciting... but then again, it doesn't transform.
