Transformers G1 1984 Battle Scene Artist David Schleinkofer Has Died at 74

We are sad to share news that on April 20, 2025, artist David Schleinkofer passed away at age 74. Transformers fans best know him as the illustrator of the fantastic battle scene that appeared on the first wave of the Generation 1 toy boxes in 1984.

The hand-painted masterpiece is the most iconic visual depicting the fight between the Autobots and Decepticons. For more than 40 years, the super detailed scene has projected us into the action filled world of the Transformers. Very interesting is the characters resemble the actual toys more so than the Marvel cartoon designs. What was cleverly done to maintain the original Diaclone Car Robots style of the Takara character art that was also used on some on Hasbro's packaging. Also established the format for most of the Transformers box art battle scenes done since.

Unfinished Original Painting "When the Transformers first came to the U.S. from Japan, they needed new toy packaging and I was assigned the job for the back of the box. It was used on bed sheets, lunch cans, tee shirts ,etc. This was sold to a collector." - David Schleinkofer

Featured is the Autobots leader Optimus Prime with his team of Sunstreaker, Prowl, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Trailbreaker, Hound, and others rolling out to battle. The confrontation begins with the Decepticon swarm including Starscream, Megatron, Seekers, Soundwave, Tape-bots, and more than meets the war for Cybertron.
