Combiner Wars - Toy Fair 2015 Interview With Senior Brand Director Jerry Jivoin Talks Defensor, Devastator, More!
RAC - Tuesday, February 17, 2015

Ben Yee of BWTF got the opportunity to sit down with Transformers Senior Brand Director Jerry Jivoin at Toy Fair, and they talked about Combiner Wars, how it came about, and how the decisions were made. Jivoin says that beginning with Wave 3, each wave will be dedicated to a single combiner, in this case Defensor! Also, did you know that Devastator was almost six LEADER class toys? Keep reading for an excerpt and a link!
Why make Devastator a Titan Class Combiner instead of just another Voyager/Deluxe/Legends combination?
This was a heated debate within the building and what to do. One, we knew we wanted to do Devastator. We did contemplate having him as just four Deluxes, a Voyager, same model as we have the other characters. But we also felt that Devastator...he's made of six characters so he's a little bit different than the other ones that only have five characters for the Deluxe and Voyager (I know we have the Legends character that makes a weapon or a chest plate) but it required six characters with the Constructicon's original team to make Devastator because you have two torso pieces. So that kind of made it a little...we would have had to put two Voyagers out and four Deluxes to make it work.

We thought about that however we also looked at Devastator and based on how the character is represented in cartoons and how he is represented in comics that he is the one of the biggest if not the biggest Combiner that has ever been created and his scale is bigger than the other Combiners as well. So we said "You know what, what if we did it all Voyager scale?" so they're bigger construction vehicles. They're construction vehicles so they're going to be bigger anyway and if we did them all in Voyager Scale we could make that so they could be in a more correct scale than what we were...we actually looked at six Leader scale construction vehicles and it was absolutely crazy! We actually looked at that as a model because we were trying to figure out what to do. Do we do two Voyagers and Deluxes, do we do six voyagers, do we do six Leaders? The scale and the price point started to get so out of whack and the scale of that was almost too big so we actually felt the six Voyagers made a nice scale difference from Superion and Menasor and Defensor that we liked the scale differences. He is bigger but still in the scale that is relatable to the other Combiners and obviously other Transformers.

Part two of the interview, concerning Robots In Disguise, will be posted soon!

Loopaza Mega Store has posted this month's scans from Figure King (Figure-Oh) magazine, and they provide possibly the best look we've yet had at Power of the Primes Optimal Optimus! (It also reinforces the idea that the lower half of his faceplate will probably not be painted on the final version of the toy, something that is going to bother us basically forever. Also on tap are images of Elita-Inf1nite and a shot of Abominus arranged G1 style - that is, with the flattest panels of the Terrorcons facing forward, and no elbows. Keep reading to see all that and more!
The weibo user we know as "tf-factory" has done it again, leaking another piece of Transformers print material not long after a dump of Studio Series Megatron's stock photos earlier today. The latest unauthorized release is packaging art for Power of The Primes Inferno, a redeco and minor retool of Combiner Wars Hot Spot. Though despite that we know the mold is Hot Spot, the art depicts it incorrectly using elements from the Onslaught alternate parts trees - a fact most easily recognized in the design of the chest panel (though the shoulders are a giveaway too). You can find the full size image below.
Previews World has posted the latest round of comic solicits, taking us in to the summer. Notable on the block this month is the return of IDW's movie continuity tie in comics, once again written by John Barber and to feature interior art by Andrew Griffith. This time out it's a prequel to the Bumblebee movie, noted as being aimed at younger readers. Apart from that, we have the usual Optimus Prime and two Lost Light issues, plus some trades including a complete collection of the Wreckers titles. Business Insider reports that the letter sent to all ToysRUs employees explaining the company's current state and laying out their lack of severance has set a timetable for the closing of stores and warehouses. Though only some states have reported in, it seems that target date for the end of ToysRUs is May 14 in states ranging from Wisconsin to Hawaii. Keep reading for more details.
