The days of shopping retail may be a thing of the past as 3D printing technology quality improves and the prices decline to where people can have their very own 3D printer at home for all their plastic needs. Much like Star Trek, one day it will just be a matter of saying, "Computer, create me
a Black Zarak."
This isn't as far off as it may seem as 3D toy designer Jothy Kandasamy has shown with his rendition of the uber-rare Japan exclusive Black Zarak figure, based on the Marvel G1 Scorponok, that he created at home. While it isn't an exact copy of the original, it's closer than most collectors will get to this figure that are going for thousands of dollars these days. What's really interesing is printing larger scale toys appears to work much better than for small stuff as the lower printing resolution is not as obvious.
What's really great is you can print your own Black Zarak, or Scorponok, with the digital files that you can buy on Ebay now for $55 USD. Kind of steep, but surely was a huge amount of work that Mr Kandasamy should be rewarded for. Frankly, this is a better deal for everyone when fans can help fans, and make money doing it. This should improve over time with lower prices on models as more people support these projects.
