The Transformers Design Team was really excited to show off the new Cyclone-Type Mini-Cons, which are spheroid Transformers that look a good deal like Bakugan. They'll be joining the existing Buzzsaw and Torpedo-types in 2016's assortments.
The first wave of Mini-Con Singles will debut the Cyclones with Decepticon Back,
a purple and green insectoid that looks like a combination of Revenge of the Fallen
Scalpel and a Star Wars
Destroyer Droid; and Decepticon Hammer,
a dragon-looking Mini-Con. Their wavemates will be Blizzard Strike Slipstream, a blue recolor of this year's Buzzsaw; and Swelter, a Torpedo. All the Mini-Con Singles will continue to include sprues of clear plastic armor and weapons - Swelter has a particularly cool set of flame armor!
Singles Wave 2 will add Cyclone Ransack
alongside Scorch Strike Buzzsaw Jetstorm
along Blizzard Strike Torpedo Glacius
New Deployers are coming to support the Cyclones too! The first Cyclone Deployer is Overload
, whose name Hasbro recently (re-)trademarked. He's a chunky bot who turns into a tank, and his face reminds me of sometime Wreckers leader Impactor. His Cyclone Mini-Con is named Backtrack.
He'll be shipping with the previously seen Blizzard Strike Drift
with Buzzsaw Jetstorm.
Wave 2 will include another beast-type Decepticon named Crazybolt,
a Cyclone Deployer who ships with a recolor of Hammer. The second Deployer in Wave 2, if any, was not shown.
There's also a Mini-Con 4-Pack due out, featuring a Scorch Strike vs. Blizzard Strike theme. On the Blizzard Strike side we've got a recolor of Swelter (yes, really!) with new Cyclone Mini-Con Backtrack.
Scorch Strike features new Cyclone Undertone
and a recolor of Buzzsaw Beastbox.
Lastly, we've got a new type of set, the Mini-Con Battle Packs! The aim of this assortment is to pack Mini-Cons with main characters - and give those main characters impressive arsenals of weapons to boot! Wave 1 pits Optimus Prime
against Cyclone Mini-Con Lord Doomitron
, and gives Prime an elaborate set of clear-plastic armor that becomes a gigantic hammer! Meanwhile, Sideswipe
will face off against the Cyclone Anvil
using samurai-themed armor that becomes a large capture claw.
Wave 2 pits Bumblebee
against Cyclone Major Mayhem
using armor that turns into a different kind of claw weapon from Sideswipe's. Grimlock
will face the Cyclone Back using armor that makes him look very similar to Age of Extinction
Grimlock and becomes a dino-head weapon in the style of Beast Wars Megatron.
The design team from Hasbro had a blast showing off the new RID stuff, and even if the second season of the show does turn out to be its last, it seems like the toyline is going out with a bang. Thanks to the folks at Hasbro and Justin Aclin at Hunter PR for the invite to their Q&A session!
