The Hasbro Pulse blog has been updated with a new update for the HasLab Unicron project. The biggest, most expensive Transformer to date is being prepared for the process of creating the mold elements needed to begin mass production. This is described in a refreshing degree of detail, explaining the hows and whys of what has to be done at this stage.
Included with the update as well is a video segment depicting the disassembly of the "tooling model" for Unicron, showing all the numerous components the figure breaks down to. We then get a rarely seen glimpse of the inner workings of Transformers production as they show the layout template sheets they use to plan how the actual metal toolings will be designed. Much of the video passes in a flash of spec up footage and fast cuts, but we've got a number of screenshots captured below in our gallery to try to capture as many of the details as possible.
Among the interesting facts shared with this update, Unicron is comprised of around 372 individual parts, which occupy a total of 59 tools or individual mold plates. They say that the average Titan Class figure takes only about half that number. They also reveal that six different types of plastic will be used. They didn't identify all of them, but they did make specific note of ABS, PP (Polypropylene), and PA (Polyamide, which you probably know better by the common name "nylon" or its identity in our community as "unpaintable plastic") as being involved.
If you ever wondered about the kind of work that goes in this process, Unicron reportedly took altogether 50 people working long hours over the course of two days to reach a usable tool layout plan. Though we can imagine since Unicron has so many parts and takes so many individual mold elements, that a more average figure would take rather less time and probably gets by with less than the small army that was deployed to tackle this task.
