Herb Trimpe, Marvel Artist on Transformers & GI Joe, Dies At Age 75

Multiple outlets have reported that Herb Trimpe, the first artist to draw Wolverine and GI Joe, has passed away suddenly at the age of 75. As an artist for Marvel Comics, Trimpe drew a handful of issues of the G1 Transformers comic, as well as GI Joe vs The Transformers and the covers to the Transformers Universe miniseries. By all accounts he was a much loved and respected comics artist and human being, and will be missed. More details on Mr. Trimpe's career after the jump.

Having joined Marvel in 1966, Trimpe was probably best known for his long run on The Incredible Hulk, but also worked on a variety of their licensed books such as Godzilla, Shogun Warriors and of course, the GI Joe and Transformers comics. While he is often credited as co-creator of Wolverine, he was the first to point out that the character was created by Roy Thomas and John Romita, though Trimpe did contribute to the plotting of Hulk issue #181 where Wolverine first appeared. He was, however, co-creator of Captain Britain. Trimpe worked for Marvel for 29 years before being let go in the chaos of the mid-1990s comics market. From there he became a teacher and ultimately returned to comics work after penning an article for the New York Times detailing his life post-Marvel and his treatment in his final year there.

Trimpe is survived by his wife and four children, who have asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Hero Initiative, a charity for older comics artists.
