Mazinger Z Vs. Transformers Comic Announced In Japan - Due Out March 28th

Oh man, would this story have just blown 6 year-old RAC's mind. He's pretty happy with it as it is! Village Books in Japan has announced a 104-page crossover comic that pits the Transformers (or properly in Japanese, "Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformer") against the robot that kickstarted the Super Robot genre in the 1970s: Mazinger Z!

The plot description places the Transformers as guests in Mazinger Z's timeline, so it stands to reason that the Autobots will be siding with Mazinger pilot Koji Kabuto while the Decepticons side with his arch-nemesis, Doctor Hell.

Artists announced for the story portion of the comic are Transformers regulars Hayato Sakamoto and Naoto Tsushima, along with Yuu Kinutani, Eiji Yoshioka, Kazumi Hoshi, and Naoyuki Fujisawa. The cover for the standard release compilation will be done by Mazinger creator Go Nagai, also known for such works as Devilman, Cutie Honey, Getter Robo, and countless others.

There will also be illustrations by FuuNin, Tsuyoshi Nonaka, Fumitaka Kunigi, and Yuki Ohshima.

This is due out in Japan on March 28th for 1980 Yen and has basically no prayer of being released in English. More's the pity.

In more recent years various versions of Mazinger Z has been released in the US under its own title, but it also ran shortly prior to the debut of Transformers in the `80s as "Tranzor-Z," starring none other than Gregg "Grimlock" Berger as Tommy Davis, the Koji Kabuto character.
