NOSTALGIA AND NUMBERS: Toy Fair Order Form From 1987 Reveals What G1 Fortress Maximus Cost Retailers

The TFWiki has posted a fascinating artifact from the year 1987: a Hasbro Toy Fair order form for the year's Transformers products!



It may get glossed over with the amount of time companies like Hasbro now put into public exhibitions at the event, but Toy Fair is a trade show with the intent of showing off and selling to retailers the coming year's products. This order form displays pretty much everything that would go on to be sold throughout that year, from Headmasters to Targetmasters to the mighty Fortress Maximus and his significantly less-mighty (in terms of physical mass) counterpart Scorponok.

If those prices have we toy-collecting elders sitting here scratching our heads and wondering if the past is even better than our nostalgia-addled brains recall it to be, remember: Trade Show. This is the amount that retailers paid, with the famously expensive (at $100!) Fortress Maximus going to retailers for a "mere" $70.




Likewise, this Christmas 1987 ad places the cost of Computron at $28 as a boxset - and this was likely on sale for the holidays - where the individual "Special Teams" figures needed to make a Combiner then wholesaled for $20! If the basic math holds today, odds seem good that that same $20 is now the approximate wholesale price for a single Voyager-class figure. Time is the fire in which we, and our money, burn...
