Review - Ironhide1975 Reviews Transformers Age of Extinction Movie

When 2007 the first Transformers movie came out, it was an exciting time for a die-hard myself. I created a Podcast, collected and toys and was thoroughly immersed again in everything Transformers. Even though the movie wasn't perfect it was an amazing experience to be alive and see a live-action Transformers movie on screen. It was a good time to be a Transformer fan and the combination of multi-marketing blitz and fan hyper-activity made 2007 a good year.

But seven years have gone by, three movies later and we are in 2014. I'm older now. My desires have shifted from doing a Podcast to making music, I no longer collect solidified oil to place on a shelf and most of my money goes towards my nine feathered children. I lowered my expectations on this movie. Going in with very little to know about the movie and not expecting much.

And sadly, my expectations were pretty much spot on.

Half-way through Transformers 4: Age of Extinction I found myself bored, figiting, and this was even during the high-paced chase sequence. I had seen this before, three times in fact! Michael Bay's formula is the same for each of these movies. Dire situations coupled with supposedly emotional characters fighting against unbelievable odds; action, stop, action, stop, explosion, witty line, conclusion.

Seven years into this relationship with Michael Bay, I want a divorce. It's not that he can't perform, he can. He just provide no emotional stimulation.

The rest of the movie just falters on several accounts.

You don't care about the humans (in fact Marky Mark would be counted as the worst dad of the year in my book.)

Your favorite character(s) die (someone should of told him this is a bad idea, 1986 anyone?)

The plot makes no sense or is so convoluted you just don't care.

Way too many extra scenes for sub-characters that don't relate to the bigger plot.
Shaky camera movement and lens flare galore.

45 minutes at the end leaving you feeling exhausted for no reason.

I actually missed Shia. Wahlberg can't act his way out of a energon bag and his daughter is a complete stereotype of a woman from 1955 ("Oh help me boyfriend, help me!"), and the supporting characters are dull and ridiculous. I wanted all the humans to be stepped on by the Decepticons and the story of a struggling father, daughter/boyfriend combination held no interest for me since I neither have kids nor believed Wahlberg's sincerity.

The Autobots this time, do have more lines, but none of these new characters gets along with each other and none are likable. Throw-away cheesy lines during battle(s) provided nothing to add to the movie and considering they may die in the new movie, I'm hesitate to bond to them. The jokes are lame and did not produce any response from the audience, and all-in-all I felt this movie was really phoned in.

Peter Cullen's voice acting really excels in this movie, but even him and Frank Welker both in this movie can't save it from a over complex plot ..... argh.....

I'm getting a migraine just typing this review.

The special effects are always amazing, and while we are at the point now where we don't have to worry about computer processing power to produce background characters on the screen, I dare say after the first fifteen minutes there wasn't one frame that didn't have a robot in it, even if they were background. But just because computers have caught up to be able to display our vision, doesn't mean that vision is exciting when actually portrayed on screen.

I think what bothers me most about this movie is the 'concept' itself sounds appealing. The multiple story-lines and the different arcs actually are intriguing, just executed poorly. This combined with Bay's extremely campy editing style and throw away scenes adding nothing to the plot, it just leaves you wanting the movie to get to the end.

It's time for Hasbro to give the franchise to someone new. We don't have to reboot the whole story, and we can keep what have previously established. But please give me something with a little bit of Transformers SOUL in it. This isn't Transformers, this is big robots with explosions. Deep down all of us fans realize that Transformers can be something much more than just an excuse to sell plastic. It really could be a definitive recollection on life, liberty, death and freedom. If Hasbro gave this series to J.J. Abrams I would be delighted to see what a real director could do with this franchise.

Until then, Michael I'm sorry, it's not working out. Thank you for the good years but I'd like to move on with my life at this point.
