Tales of the Fallen #1 - IDW - Comic Book

IDW opened it’s first post RotF volly into the movie verse this week with Tales of the Fallen #1. Like the Spotlight series, Tales of the Fallen is a series of one issue stories, this one focuses on Bumbleebee and Sam.

Set between the ’07 movie and Revenge of the Fallen, issue one is a very standard one issue, character narrated series of small scenes punctuated by a fight at the end. Chris Mowry tries to take us to some unexplored ground in the movie-verse, but any meaningful story seems to be stagnated by the need not to step on the toes of the films. I was disappointed to see that IDW doesn’t even have free reign between the movies.

I found Carlos Mango’s art to be very compelling in this issue. Normally I don’t feel that the movie designs translate very well to the comic format, but I really enjoyed these renditions. The captured the feel of the movie detailed look, with out getting over drawn or just cartooning the robots. The humans looks are consistent, but not much like their human counter parts.

Over all, there’s nothing wrong with this issue. It’s a good little stand alone, the trouble is it seems to stand a little too alone. At the end it feels so neatly to be back where it started it feels like an episode from a syndicated series meant to be aired in any order. Perhaps latter issues in the Tales of the Fallen series will reveal hidden depths.
